"Herbal Viagra" can it harm you?

For just about every drug that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration there is some other group that rears its head promoting an alternative to the original? They brag that it is as good, or even, better and they also offer their product for a discounted price. The problem is that they are deceptive and herbal Viagra is often full of unnatural chemicals that can harm the cardiovascular system and can also conflict with other drugs. More simply put, they can be quite dangerous.

Because Viagra was so successful herbal imitations popped up everywhere. If typed into search engines massive results will appear. Of course Pfizer attorneys quickly reminded all, of the registered trademark for Viagra. For example, a British company tried to market an herbal sex-enhancing product called "Viagrene" and was stopped by Pfizer’s lawyers (The Gilded Herb, Autumn 1999, Vol. 1, Issue 5).

Over the past year reports about herbal Viagra alternatives have appeared in news. An African version called "Vuka Vuka," or Wake Up, Wake Up, is now the most popular drug in Zimbabwe according to the Zimbabwe Independent newspaper. An Associated Press report described a Lebanese version made from the root of the Hairy Root Plant ("Shirsh Zallouh"). This is identified as Ferula hormonis, a perennial of the parsley family that is found above 6,000 feet in the mountains. According to the report, the roots are soaked in wine or are ground into powder and taken in capsules or mixed with tea (The Gilded Herb, Autumn 1999, Vol. 1, Issue 5).

Many have been inspired by the huge success of Viagra and many have tried to cash in on some of the action by bringing their herbal alternatives forward. Wild oats was a big contributor to the herbal Viagra scene because the herb has stimulating properties but there is no specific evidence that it has any libido enhancement properties to it. Some deem wild oats as the Viagra alternative claiming it to have no side effects and perfectly safe for use with people that have high blood pressure and heart problems.

Another herbal Viagra compound is two tonic herbs, saw palmetto and stinging nettle. Nettle is often used for urinary tract problems and saw palmetto is one of the most popular herbs on the market currently and is used for inflammation and prostrate gland enlargement. Because of this many say that combines the two could be somewhat effective on erectile dysfunction.
