Who cares about the history of tobacco? Basic and fundamental mistake is we think too much before doing something and probably that is the reason of non-accomplishment of any goal.Only way of doing something is - just do it! You already know that chewing tobacco can cause cancer, don’t you? Is that not reason enough to quit? Love yourself if you can’t love anybodyelse and if you can’t really think about your near and dear ones, lets not talk about society and your moral obligations for time being, at least be selfish. Quit chewing tobacco now. How does that make any difference if you knew what are different types of smokeless tobacco or what is the statistics of death toll? Only information required is that it will kill you sooner or later. Chewing tobacco is available in loose leaf, plug (plug–firm and plug–moist), or twist forms, with the user putting a wad of tobacco inside the cheek. People in many other countries and regions, including India, parts of Africa, and some Central Asian countries, have a long history of using smokeless tobacco products.

So you really want to know…

So here it goes…Smokeless tobacco users increase their risk for cancer of the oral cavity. Oral cancer can include cancer of the lip, tongue, cheeks, gums, and the floor and roof of the mouth.Than people who do not use smokeless tobacco, people who use oral snuff for a long time have a much greater risk for cancer of the cheek and gum. Some of the other effects of smokeless tobacco use include addiction to nicotine, oral leukoplakia (white mouth lesions that can become cancerous), gum disease, and gum recession (when the gum pulls away from the teeth). Possible increasedrisks for heart disease, diabetes, and reproductive problems are being studied.

Beginning

All tread this path of no return, by different illusion they have…illusion that its macho, stylish …kewl. However by the time the glasshouse breaks, it’s too late to come back . High time that we stop glorification of tobacco, which exists everywhere. In the United States, the 2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, which was conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, reported the following statistics:
  • An estimated 7.6 million Americans age 12 and older (3.4 percent) had used smokeless tobacco in the past month.
  • Smokeless tobacco use was most common among young adults ages 18 to 25.
  • Men were 10 times more likely than women to report using smokeless tobacco (6.5 percent of men age 12 and older compared with 0.5 percent of women).
Science

Chewing tobacco and snuff contains 28 carcinogens (cancer–causing agents). The most harmful carcinogens in smokeless tobacco are the tobacco–specific nitro amines (TSNAs). They are formed during the growing, curing, fermenting, and aging of tobacco.

TSNAs have been detected in some smokeless tobacco products at levels many times higher than levels of other types of nitrosamines that are allowed in foods, such as bacon and beer. Other cancer–causing substances in smokeless tobacco include N–nitrosamino acids, volatile N–nitrosamines, benzo(a)pyrene, volatile aldehydes, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, hydrazine, arsenic, nickel, cadmium, benzopyrene, and polonium–210. All tobacco, including smokeless tobacco, contains nicotine, which is addictive.

The amount of nicotine absorbed from smokeless tobacco is thrice the amount delivered by a cigarette. Nicotine is absorbed more slowly from smokeless tobacco than from cigarettes, but more nicotine per dose is absorbed from smokeless tobacco than from cigarettes. Also, the nicotine stays in the bloodstream for a longer time.

Economics

The economic costs of tobacco use are equally mind-boggling. The cost to the international community in terms of death and disability is massively greater than the economic gain from the production and sale of tobacco products, according to the World Bank.3 In India, for example, the Voluntary Health Association estimates that tobacco-related illnesses cost the government $11 billion a year.4 In the small country of Costa Rica, smoking-related illnesses cost the social security system an estimated $534 million per year, and approximately 11 percent of deaths in the country are tobacco-related.5 Only in the United States every year, an estimated 438,000 people die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, and another 8.6 million have a serious illness caused by smoking. For every person who dies from smoking, 20 more people suffer from at least one serious tobacco-related illness. Despite these risks, approximately 45.1 million U.S. adults smoke cigarettes. Coupled with this enormous health toll is the significant economic burden of tobacco use: more than $75 billion per year in medical expenditures and another $92 billion per year resulting from lost productivity. By 2025, the number of people worldwide who die each year from tobacco-related disease will rise from the current 3.5 million to 10 million, according to the WHO. At the same time, death and disability due to tobacco use will increase from 3 percent to 9 percent of the global total. A majority of these deaths will occur in the Third World and Eastern Europe. Given these projections, more than 100 million people will die from tobacco-related illness over the next 30 years, exceeding the toll from AIDS, tuberculosis, automobile accidents, maternal mortality, homicide and suicide combined.

Quit…Start bondage free life

For people who think chewing tobacco is a safer alternative, don’t get promoted from one hell to another. Its difficult to understand why government does not ban tobacco globally? Double standards exists in their talks and deeds all over. We all know that tobacco is bad for health, we all know it kills, still we only talk and do research and keep publishing it, just stop it guys! It’s important to create a tobacco free society for the generations to come. Nothing is impossible. Nothing is more important than life, its so beautiful and human body is a miracle, however the truth remains that nothing can last if we don’t respect it, same is the case with our body too, substance abuse like chewing tobacco can cause cessation of all momentary high…for ever. Come back before it’s too late, because the path you are treading, what awaits you is a dead end!
