How to Bind a Quilt
- The materials you will require to bind a quilt are pins, sewing needles and threads which will match with the color of the cloth of the quilt.
- Across the full width of the fabric, cut 2.5 inch binding strips.
- Now, sew all these strips together. The strips should be placed in such a way that the ends of the strips form a 90 degree angle. They should be sewed in a diagonal manner and the end of the strips should be trimmed. The finished strip should be 12 inch longer than the quilt from all the sides.
- Now, start folding the strips. Fold the strips in such a way that the starting point of the strip forms 45 degrees angle.
- Allow the strip to face outside and fold half of its length. In order to give a binding stability, spray the strip with starch and press it.
- Now, with the help of safety pins, pin the strip to the quilt. In the front of the quilt, lay the binding strip. Pin it in such a way that the right sides are together and the edges are even.
- Now, you can start with the procedure of sewing the binding to the quilt. Start from the beginning and then gradually move towards the end. Before you remove the quilt, back stitch it.
- Now, lay this quilt on a flat surface and then, fold the binding strip in such away that it forms a 90 degree angle with the quilt top.
- Fold the strip in such a way that the raw edge of the strip is even with the raw edge of the quilt. After that, start stitching. Continue it till you are ¼ inch away from the next corner.
- Repeat the above two steps for all the sides. When you are at the last side, stop when you are 8 inches away from the end. Back stitch the whole thing now.
- You can trim all the excess length. Now, the final section of the binding should be stitched to the quilt.
- Over the edge of the quilt, turn the binding strip. In order to form neat miters, fold the binding at all the corners.
- In order to attach the strip again to the quilt, you can make use of pins.
- The back of the binding should be slip stitched to the back of the quilt. This should be done by hand and the use of machine should be avoided.
- Before you start with the actual process, assemble all the materials required for binding.
- Do not forget to trim off the extras.
- The stitches should form a straight line and they should not be zig-zag.
- Make use of a scissor to cut off the extra thread and do not cut it with your teeth as it might tend to pull the stitch and spoil it.
- Make sure that the thread you opt for has the same color as that of the quilt.
