Queer Analogies

Could the law of entropy which governs the body be also a law for the mind? And therefore, could the same principles applied to the stopping of the entropy in the body be also applied for the mind? See more!
Someone used to say that with the help of imagination one can see the world in a grain of sand. The surrounding world and even human's inner universe always represented an enormous interest to mere humans and especially to searching scientists. Discovering bits of information about the laws of the universe and about the natural going of living systems led to correlations and analogies to other phenomena of life. Therefore, by observing a flying bird people began to learn about the mysteries of flight and soon they were up in the skies, accomplishing a most daring dream. People found a series of analogies which guided them into everyday life.

An interesting analogy comes from the laws of physics. The second thermodynamic law takes about entropy. This term was first brought to the world's scene by Rudolph Clausius and it originates from the Greek language, having the meaning of "turning toward". Entropy is a law which governs every closed system and it describes the phenomenon of dissipation, destruction, disintegration. Every single system in the universe is governed by entropy, therefore, without interference every system tends to disintegration and alteration. This phenomenon can be observed all around: sugar dissolving in a glass of water, an abandoned house, a brand new car observed over the years, every engine, every piece of cloth, food they all end up in ruin.

People are not very worried about this process when it comes to material things, because they can be replaced, but they become anxious and melancholic when they observe it in the nature, in their pets, and especially in their own bodies. Entropy drives living systems to alteration and eventually to death. A queer thing happens though; when food is ingested, the proteins brought inside the system replace the dead cells and renew the body. In only a few years every cell is replaced with another one, except for the neurons, and by that, the bones, the muscles, the skin, everything is regenerated. Of course, this happens only to a degree, because as time passes, the bodies lose their capacity to regenerate and entropy follows its course. The essence is though that living systems have the ability to stop entropy and that happens when healthy food is ingested.

Just as this law applies to the body, it is also available for the mental realm. "Garbage in, garbage out" represents a perfect illustration for what happens with the human mind. Just as bodies defeat entropy by eating healthy food, so does the mind. Fed with moral principles, healthy relationships, good reading, knowledge, beauty, the mind grows healthy and stays young, even as time passes. On the opposite, if the mind is fed with immorality, negative dysfunctional feelings, ugliness, unhealthy relationship, it will turn the human being into a brute, with weary body and spirit.

Furthermore, another fascinating analogy can be made by observing the human body and the process of procreation. On one hand, an ovule is released but it does nothing else other than waiting. On the other hand, about 2 billions of spermatozoids are released inside the vagina. They fight to climb the uterus, but inside it a dense network of proteins is made in order to select only the strongest spermatozoids. Only 200 manage to pass this protein network. The ovule is protected by a semi-permeable membrane which can be penetrated only by certain substances. Only some of the spermatozoids have those chemical substances inside them, but the substances are also protected by a membrane. What happens next is that the first spermatozoid to reach the ovule breaks its own membrane and releases the substances which help it penetrate the ovule. When this happens, the two incomplete sets of chromosomes unite, forming the new DNA. Another thing that occurs is that the ovule's membrane which used to be semi-permeable, it now becomes totally impermeable, even if another spermatozoid releases its substances.

This could represent the perfect analogy with every love story presented in the fairy tales. Though, it is very rare nowadays, because several of the above presented principles are broken.

In conclusion, these amazing analogies can reinforce the hopes and the hunches which lie within the minds of many people who dare to see their world in a grain of sand.
