Purchasing a Bed Mattress - How to Buy a Mattress
Okay, so going out to purchase a bed mattress is certainly not going to be the most exciting thing you do in your lifetime. Some people find it stressful even and some find it dull. But buying a bed mattress can be a tricky thing and the right decision (or the wrong one) can affect your health. After all, your health is as good as a good night’s sleep isn’t it? And this boils down to the perfect bed mattress.

The first thing you realize is that mattress purchasing isn’t as simple as you thought it would be. It’s not simply going to the shop, lying on the mattress to check for comfort and placing the order according to measurements. No my friends, mattress shopping is a little more technical than that.

Like all things, you need to be prepared for mattress purchasing. You need to be prepared with information and all the research you can get. Go to different stores and find out about types and styles. Talk to friends who have recently bought mattresses. Gear up with all the information…after all no body wants to be conned into buying a mattress they did not want and is nothing more than a headache (or rather backache).

How to buy a mattress – things to know

Here are some tips or things to know about buying a bed mattress that every intelligent buyer should know:
  • Durability: You need a mattress that is going to last you for a while, do you really want to go mattress shopping again after a year? A good mattress should last you five to ten years. This depends on the use you get out of the mattress and on the quality of the mattress and mattress pad. The mattress needs to be made of good and quality material for it to last you a decade.
  • Box Spring: the box spring is as important if not more important than the mattress itself. Never put a new mattress on an old box…it’s the worst thing you could do for your back. The mattress and the box have to compliment each other.
  • Soft or hard mattress: you need to decide what kind of mattress you want. Do you want a soft mattress or a hard one? The best way to judge the mattress is to lie down on it and test it. And never rely on the brand…always test it!
  • Warranty: always check for warranty period of the mattress. Never buy a mattress that provides only a one-year warranty…there is something wrong with it as most companies offer twenty-year warranties. So remember that a bed mattress with a warranty above ten years is acceptable.
  • Measurements: always take your bed measurements with you to get the right sized mattress. There are several types of mattresses in the market and there is no standard size, so measure properly.
  • Coils: each mattress will have coils and springs inside it. Do not get talked into buying a mattress because it has extra coils. This does not mean the bed mattress is of good quality. Choose a mattress according to its quality and only after trying it out.
  • Mattress Comparison: another bit of advice is that you should do a mattress comparison before deciding on one particular mattress. Compare different mattress according to their mattress pads, the springs, the coils and also do not forget to compare price and warranty period. Only after you are satisfied with all these, only then whip out your credit card.
Now that you have gathered all the information and read all the tips you can buy yourself some good sleep with a good quality bed mattress.
