Puppy Shots Schedule
It is your duty to maintain your puppy shots schedule to ensure that your puppy has a happy and illness free life. There are some antibodies which a puppy gets from its mother. However, inspite of these antibodies, your puppy will need vaccinations. Here is some information about puppy shots schedule.
What Is Puppy Shot Schedule?
Puppy vaccination or puppy shots is an important part of dog care. Many new pet owners are faced with a question "puppy shots - when to give?". Before we go to the schedule, let's see the names of the diseases against which your beloved pet needs to be vaccinated. Most of these diseases can be detrimental to dog health which is the reason for puppy shots schedule:
- Hepatitis → Liver disease.
- Distemper → Viral disease affecting brain, lungs and intestine
- Parainfluenza → Infectious bronchitis
- Leptospirosis → Urinary tract bacterial disease
- Rabies → Fatal viral disease
- Corona → Intestinal viral disease
- Parvo-virus → Intestinal viral disease
- Kennel Cough (Bordatella) → Bacterial infection affecting upper respiratory system
| Age | Shot Name |

| 11 to 12 weeks | 2nd DHLPP + Corona |
| 15 to 16 weeks | 3rd DHLPP + Corona |

Adult Dog Shots Schedule
- DHLLP vaccine is to be administered to dogs once in a year.
- Your pet dog will need to undergo heartworm test yearly. Read on dog worms for more information.
- The second shot of rabies vaccine should be given 12 months after the first shot. Thereafter, rabies vaccine should be given every three years.
- Vaccination against kennel cough is also to be administered every year. For more information on kennel cough in dogs, click here.
People assume that as soon as their pet is administered a vaccine, it will boost their pet's immune system. This is, however, not true. It is necessary for the pet’s immune system to recognize the antigens received and then respond to it. For the pet to be totally protected against the disease, it will take anywhere between 5 to 10 days. There is another misconception that vaccination doses given to a dog differs from breed to breed and is dependent on size but this is not true. The dose quantity administered is the same to all breeds of dogs. Read on dog health problems.
Puppy Shots Side Effects
After puppy shots schedule, now lets see what are the side effects of puppy shots. Like babies, puppies can also have some side effects after vaccination. One of the first side effects of puppy shot is depression. Usually you will notice that your pet is depressed for about a day after the shot. If the pet is depressed for more than a couple of days, you will need to call your veterinarian. Some puppies also have bouts of vomiting after vaccination. This condition lasts normally for about a day. Another side effect of vaccination on puppies is diarrhea. Like vomiting, diarrhea also lasts for about a day. In case it does not, contact your pet's veterinarian. If you notice any kind of swelling, you should contact the veterinarian immediately. In some rare cases, you may notice that your pet is shaking. This is not a serious condition. It normally goes away after a day. Here is more information on dog illnesses.
Until your pet is immunized, it is advisable not to allow your puppy to come in contact with other dogs. This means until the 3rd DDHLP is administered, keep the pup at home. In case your pet is going to be at a farm among other animals, your puppy may need vaccination against lyme disease. Ticks are the carriers of lyme disease and so removing ticks from dogs is important. I would like to reiterate that it is important not to give any shot of the puppy shots schedule a miss. It can prove to be fatal for your beloved pet.
