Pug History
Pug is considered as one of the oldest dog breeds that originated in the orient, somewhere around 5th century BC. Orient is a term used to refer to countries of Asia. The history of pugs is always a question of debate. Some people believe that these dogs were specifically found in China. Hence they are also called Chinese pugs. They were brought to Europe in 16th century by the British when they discovered it during an attack on China. But some historians state that pugs were introduced to Holland by Dutch traders even before they were brought to England. Hence they were also called Dutch Mastiff. There are many beliefs on how pugs were introduced in the western hemisphere. Pugs were very popular pets during Victorian times. It was considered as one of the royal pet dogs to be owned.
Physical Features of Pug

Their faces with short wrinkled muzzles make them look different from other dog breeds. Their faces somewhat resemble the features of Bulldogs. This dog's body is square shaped with a curled tail. Pugs are very small in size and have a compact body covered with short smooth fur. Their velvety ears look very pleasant because of their nose shape. Eyes of pugs are also one of the unique features of pugs. Their eyes are round, dark, large, lustrous and very expressive. They have short skinny legs, broad neck with dewlap that make their body square shaped. Pugs can be found with many types of fur colors. Silver, apricot, black and fawn are some of the common colors of pug fur.
Pug Temperament
Pug is considered to be the one amongst the dogs that come under toy breed. These dogs are very friendly with splendid temperament. They are sometimes known as clowns that make you laugh and entertain you all the time. Pugs get well with all the members of the family, including small children and older people and even visitors. They are very playful, loyal to their master, chirpy and are also good with other dogs. When trained properly, pug puppies or pug dogs make some of the most intelligent dogs. They are sensitive to voice and hence one needs to use a low pitch of voice while communicating with them. At times, they become jealous but such situations are rarely observed and they get along well even with strangers. Though pug is a small dog, it is a good watchdog. In short, pug is a very loving, cheerful, friendly, playful and devoted type of pet. They love their master and tend to follow him / her all the time.
Pug Health and Exercise
Pugs are very easy to maintain, the only care that needs to be taken, is cleaning of the muzzle area. They require exercise on a daily basis. Take care that you don't make your pug wheeze due to over-exercise. You can take your pug for a walk for at least half an hour everyday. Pugs are allergic to cold and breathing problems due to the structure of their wrinkled muzzle. They are susceptible to health problems, like, CHD and pug dog encephalitis. They sneeze frequently and weep due to delicate eyes. Pugs cannot bear excessive heat, so ensure that you take proper care of your pug.
Pug Breeds
Pug chihuahua is a mixed breed of pug and chihuahua dogs and inherits features of both these dog breeds. Miniature pugs or teacup pugs are a very rare breed of pug. These are not pure breeds of pugs. They are similar to pug chihuahua in appearance.
