Publish A Craft Book

For those who have thought of writing a craft book and publishing it themselves there has never been a better time. The barriers to publish a craft book which have been around for decades, if not centuries, have also disappeared.

What used to stop people publishing a craft book were things like printing costs, storage, distribution and advertising. Now if you have basic pc skills and access to the internet you can write your own craft book and publish it yourself too.

You need no more skills than you've already demonstrated in getting this far! You can read, you've got a computer and you've got on the internet. Any software you need you probably already have or you can get for free. As for a website to sell a craft book, less than the cost of a take-out pizza.

Old fashioned craft book publishing depended as much on number-crunchers as any quality in the craft book itself. A publisher would have their ultimate profit to consider. If your craft book didn't immediately meet projections you were sunk. Even if you got the go ahead you'd wait as much as a couple of years for just ten percent of the cover price!

Contrast that with modern digital craft book publishing a delivery and you could be selling craft books in a few weeks and pocketing 80 per cent plus of the cover price. With figures like that it's no surprise that this is a huge growth market.

In the title I mentioned win win. The high profit margins of digital craft books is one area but there are other benefits. If you make and sell your own craft items they're likely to become more sought after - because you've written a craft book and are obviously an expert.

There's a good chance you'll be able to get higher prices too. If you're more of a designer and maker for personal use than a seller of crafts, there's still the opportunity for speaking engagements of demonstrations which can bring increased exposure and, let's face it, more money!

Am I painting to simplistic a picture of all this. No, I don't think I am. It will require some work, of course, and how quickly you achieve your goals will depend on the amount of time you can dedicate. As for the technology and financial aspects, they really are remarkably low. They're certainly no barrier.

There's maybe a thing or two you don't know yet, but learning new skills are hardly a problem for someone involved in crafts!

If you want to publish a craft book, you can. There's no doubt about it. Some people do it for nice, additional, repeating income. Some build up to a full-time income from it. How far you want your adventure in writing is up to you.
