Tips for Public Speaking
When you know you are going to deliver a speech or give a presentation, it's always better to go prepared. Given below are some tips for effective public speaking.
- Prepare your speech or presentation material well in advance. You should know the head and tail of your material by heart. Make sure you haven't memorized it blindly, as that will increase the chances of you forgetting you words in front of the crowd.
- Practice speaking in front of the mirror or rehearsing in front of your friend or family members will definitely help. The more you practice, the more you will remember the matter and you won't have to worry about forgetting at the last minute.
- If you know the location where you will be giving your speech or presentation, make sure you go there well in advance and rehearse in the absence of audience. This will give you an idea of the visual space you have and make you comfortable. You can also practice with the microphone on. Thus, you won't have to adjust it in front of the audience.
- Be right on time for the presentation and don't make a late entry as that will give a wrong impression about you.
- Greet the audience with a soft friendly smile and introduce yourself and your topic. Do all of this in a casual, yet calm way as it is very important to make the audience feel comfortable in order to create an interactive session. This is one of the most effective public speaking tips for a beginner.
- Once you have begun to speak, take care that you do not stammer while talking. Take pauses or use a reference sheet or a visual slide to remember the main points.
- If you make mistakes, don't get tensed as you will end up making bigger ones. To avoid eye contact with the audience at such a time, focus at the four corners of the room. When you make eye contact, people know you have made mistakes and in turn, make you conscious.
- Speak in a loud and clear voice as to let the audience know, you've done your homework and that you are a confident speaker. Never let them notice your sweaty palms.
- One of the other important tips to improve public speaking is to keep happy expressions on your face and not look scared as this might reflect in your interaction session when you receive or are bombarded(!) with questions from the audience.
- Give many examples throughout the talk, as people like to relate to what they are listening to. Enjoy your presentation and conclude it with a funny message so as to lighten the formal atmosphere in the crowd. Following this public speaking tip will help you be in a calm state of mind.
- Lastly, stay relaxed and focused on your speech and don't let the nervousness show on your face. I am sure you will have the audience applauding for your fantastic speaking abilities.
