Psyllium Husk Facts
It is derived from the crushed seeds of the plant Plantago ovata. This plant is said to be native to India, where it is called ispaghula or isabgol. The seeds of this plant are so small that around 1000 such seeds amount to a weight of just 2 metric grams. Once harvested, these seeds are thrashed and sifted to separate the husks. These husks have high levels of mucilage (gelatinous substance), that explains its affinity towards water. Though water soluble, psyllium husks are indigestible for humans and so is considered as a bulk-forming laxative. Inside the intestines, they absorb excess water and swell up in a gelatinous form, thereby increasing the bulk of the stools, that get softer too. This enhances the rate of waste expulsion from the intestines.
Apart from preventing constipation, this helps in eliminating toxins at a higher rate. So, it is also beneficial for colon cleansing. As the toxins are prevented from staying inside the body for a longer time, the risk of developing certain forms of cancer (especially, colon cancer) gets reduced. As mentioned above, psyllium has long been used by humans for therapeutic purposes. It is used in Ayurveda, as a colon cleansing agent and for improving circulation of blood.
Now, psyllium husk is included in high-fiber cereals, health foods and dietary supplements. It is also available as capsules, raw husk, and powder. While psyllium husk powder has to be mixed in water or taken along with food, raw husk has to be thoroughly dissolved in water, before any use. Capsules are found to be the most convenient ones for use. They are nothing but psyllium husk powder covered with gelatin or plant derived cellulose. Some brands may contain other ingredients, like acidophilus bacteria and other supplements. So, go through the ingredients before buying any product.

So, psyllium husk is beneficial for the digestive system, in improving blood circulation, and related causes. It is said to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestine. Studies show that this fiber supplement is also good in achieving weight loss, as the user may feel full for longer periods, thereby curtailing cravings for food. Psyllium is believed to have cholesterol lowering properties and is also said to be beneficial for those with hemorrhoids, and irritable bowel syndrome. It is said to be good for diabetes patients, as it may be useful in lowering blood sugar levels. Even those who have the risk of diabetes may prevent the condition with the use of psyllium husk capsules.
Side effects include bloating, cramping, flatulence, besides other minor things. Following the instructions (regarding psyllium use) of your doctor may help you to avoid these side effects to some extent. One of the main things to remember while using this product is that you must take it with at least one glass of water. Otherwise, it may swell up in the throat and cause choking. But this side effect may not be applicable for capsules that can be easily swallowed. In case you have any prescription drugs, use it two hours before or after the consumption of psyllium. Some people may develop allergic reactions too. It is not recommended for pregnant women and kids. Those with difficulty swallowing, severe constipation, intestinal blockage, and rectal bleeding, should not use this product.
It will be better to take this supplement as per the instructions of your doctor. You have to follow the right psyllium husk capsules dosage and duration of use. Dosage is decided on the basis of various factors, like age of the user, his / her medical condition, and other relevant factors.
