Protect Valuable Items Outside Your Property with Home Security

This article lists creative ways to use your home security to protect items outside your home.
Burglars Easily Steal Air Conditioning Units

You return from taking your kids to school and something just doesn’t feel right. You notice your side gate is open. You peek around the corner and you see footprints across the lawn. You notice there is a large, empty space where your air conditioning unit used to be. You only left the house for 10 minutes. In just that short amount of time, thieves managed to steal your very expensive AC unit.

Don’t be the next victim of property theft. Quality home security will catch thieves in the act. Deter thieves from stealing expensive items such as AC units (burglars are also known to steal electrical copper wiring and AC unit components). Before you leave for the weekend, make sure your valuables are locked inside sheds with padlocks and don’t leave spare keys in visible locations.

Protect Your Backyard and Garden from Theft

Burglars will disguise themselves as landscapers or gardeners so they can easily steal equipment from backyards. Home burglars have been known to steal the following outside items: lawn mowers, power tools and patio furniture.

Don’t leave ladders, tools or patio furniture close to windows or sliding glass doors. Burglars have been known to use tools to smash open windows and sliding glass doors. Ladders make it very easy for burglars to access your home through an upstairs window.

Home security motion sensors, flood lights and outside surveillance cameras surrounding your property will scare away potential home burglars. You also can deter burglars from stealing valuable items around your property in the following ways:

Make gravel/small stone paths around your home. Burglars don’t like gravel or small stones because they make too much noise.

Lock up patio furniture and expensive power tools in a secure shed. Do not leave shed or outside storage units open (especially if you go away for an extended length of time).

Write down the serial codes and information about your AC condenser unit (in case your unit is stolen and a burglar tries to re-sell it elsewhere).

Surround Your Backyard with Thorny Bushes and Plants

Use creative methods to keep burglars off your property. Certain garden plants can act as a natural deterrent who try to sneak into your backyard. Many of these plants have sharp thorns or stickers which makes your backyard less attractive to burglars. Plant garden borders with the following plants and flowers:

Holly
Blackberry brambles
Hawthorn
Pyracantha
Gorse
Roses
