Pros and Cons of Solar Energy
Energy crisis has pushed us to find feasible alternative energy sources. Solar energy, a major alternative, is in vogue nowadays and is widely discussed. Let us learn about this exciting energy source here.
Pros of Solar Energy
Unlike nuclear energy and energy obtained from fossil fuels it does not leave behind waste products and is a non-polluting source of energy. It doesn’t have the dangers of nuclear technology. It reduces mankind’s reliance on fossil fuels. While the known fossil fuel reserves are expected to be finished in the 21st century itself, solar energy will last for a very long period of time. It will last as long as the sun lasts.
Once installed, it is a free source of electricity. Using this kind of energy can control global warming. In geographically far-flung locations it is usually convenient and cheaper to install solar energy equipment than conventional electrical equipment. Unlike electricity it does not require wires to travel and thus can be used in space like artificial satellites and space stations.
Solar equipment requires less maintenance as compared to conventional energy equipment, resulting in significant cost saving. Solar electricity can be stored, thanks to modern technology. Unlike nuclear energy it can be turned off and on, i.e., it can be produced on an as per need basis. Most national governments offer concessions on the usage of solar energy as part of their "green" drive. Unlike the generation of conventional energy, solar energy generation is completely silent hence devoid of noise pollution.
Cons of Solar Energy
The equipment is too expensive for the common man and needs a considerable area to install. Weather plays a factor as the sun’s rays are not present if there are clouds covering it or if it rains or snows. At night, this energy is not available and one has to rely on other sources.
Another disadvantage is that its production efficiency can be affected by the presence of pollution. Although used in some automobiles, the ones using solar energy are far too slow to be desired.
Though there are many cons of solar energy the pros outweigh the cons. Though not a substantial source of energy in the present it promises to be one in the near future. Let us hope scientists discover ways of making it cheaper and more convenient to use. I foresee a clean and beautiful planet earth completely powered by solar energy in the future. I encourage you to start using this useful technology immediately if you are not using it already.
