Professional Attire

Our attire is as important as our attitude while at a workplace. Here are some tips for you to help you choose the best professional attire for yourself.
In today's looks conscious world, a lot of importance is given to the perfect professional attire. Most professional organizations have their own specifications and rules about dress code. No matter how fashion conscious the world is, you still need to be pretty conservative while choosing an outfit for an interview or a professional meeting, which is the reason why it is really important to know what well-polished sophisticated attire is all about.

Professional Attire at the Workplace

Before selecting the correct attire for yourself, it is very important to evaluate the atmosphere of the workplace that you are working in. Also, consider the kind of job profile that you have and try not to overwhelm your surroundings with the attire that you choose. Lastly, consider the exposure that you are about to get in the office. For instance, if the workplace is open for visitors (outside the office) and clients, then you may want to wear pretty good clothes so that you can maintain the image of your workplace, in general. If not, then the organization may provide you with a relatively flexible dress code.

There is a new school of thoughts that emphasizes on 'professional casual attire'. Such semi formal attire renders a sort of comfort amongst the employees. However, there are some rules associated with professional casual attire. For instance, the clothes that may sound appropriate for beach party, dance club, sports events and yard works are not good for an office environment, however casual it may be. Also, clothes that are too flashy and showy may also not be allowed in the workplace. Clothes that have slogans and words written on them and clothes that expose the body are also not acceptable.

Professional Attire for Women

The classic professional attire for women is a skirted suit or a formal pantsuit. When selecting skirts, go for basic slightly-flared or pencil straight skirts. To make it more attractive, you may want to add a kick-pleat or a slit in the side or front. Your skirt needs to fall at least 1 or more inches below the knee. Go for subtle colors when it comes to the blouses. Stick to neutral and pastel colors when it comes to jackets and skirts. Opt for black, charcoal, blue, gray, beige and/or brown, etc. Once you are done with the selection of your attire, it is time to concentrate on women's shoes. Normally, the attire requires a nice pair of pumps with moderate heels.

Creating a nice wardrobe of professional attire can be a bit expensive, but once you do that, you can definitely maintain it for a few years to come. For such a healthy wardrobe, you may need two jackets, three skirts, five blouses and two pairs of nice pumps. Always avoid those flimsy wedge heels, stilettos and trendy open toe footwear. Always remember that professional apparel that you choose ought to be classic, simple and sophisticated. Do not overdo it with heavy makeup, bold jewelry and/or strong perfumes. Keep it as subtle as possible and you are in for many compliments and several admiring glances.

Professional Attire for Men

Like women, not much has changed as far as professional attire for men is concerned. They still need to wear suits, shirts and ties, along with neat hair, nice shoes and subtle fashion accessories. When looking for a suit always opt for a traditional classic cut suit with subtle/typical colors and conservative fabrics. Go for black, navy and other shades of blue, gray, charcoal, etc. You can opt for plain fabric or the pinstripe silk wool fabric. Long sleeved shirts with subtle hues of pastel colors, shades of white and blue with solid conservative stripes, etc. can be the perfect choice.

The next step would be the selection of the tie. Always avoid patterned ties with bold designs and graphics, instead stick to conservative ties that are made of professional quality silk. Use matching and plain handkerchiefs. Along with ties, one thing that men really need to concentrate on are socks. Make it a point to use tight and correct length socks with solid and matching colors. While choosing belts and shoes, opt for black leather belt and black leather shoes, as the standard choice for men's attire. Lastly, men need to avoid wearing jewelry, like earrings. However, you can wear a conservative watch and a wedding ring.

Avoiding anything flashy is the first rule that you need to follow. It may sound conservative and boring, but professional attire is still conservative and traditional in most workplaces.
