What is Priority Mail?
The United States Postal Service (U.S.P.S.) has a service called the Priority Mail service by which it enables people to send packages throughout the country. The sizes of the packages offered, include the following,
- Flat Rate Envelope: (Size - 9 1/2" x 12 ½"). This is basically for important paper documents.
- Small Flat Rate Box: (Size - 8 5/8" x 5 3/8" x 1 5/8"). This box is suitable for packages like small gifts and other small boxed articles.
- Medium Flat Rate Box: This box comes in two sizes. The first is (11" x 8 1/2" x 5 ½") . This box is bigger than the above-mentioned one and carries packages like office supplies in bulk etc. The second one (Size - 11 7/8" x 3 3/8" x 13 5/8") can transport office equipment etc.
- Large Flat Rate Box: (Size - 12" x 12" x 5 ½"). This is the largest packaging box available and is suitable for medium size electronic items and the like.
Tracking Priority Mail
Though tracking of the package while it is in transit is not always possible, there are some services called Extra Services that U.S.P.S. offers so that you can confirm the delivery of your package. These include the following,
- Online: To check the status of your package online, you can log on to the U.S.P.S. website and on the top right corner, click the 'Track and Confirm' option. A window will ask you for your label/receipt number. Enter the number and hit 'Go'. The status of your package will be displayed (might not be available for all areas).
- Signature Confirmation: This service sends you (by mail/fax) a confirmation that the intended recipient has received the package, with his signature as proof.
- Delivery Confirmation: With this service, you can get information about the date, time and ZIP code of delivery or attempted delivery of your package, by phone or online.
- Certified Mail: With the help of this service, the sender receives a stamped receipt which bears the date on which the package was mailed. When the package is received by the recipient, another receipt is maintained by the post office.
- Restricted Delivery: This service ensures that your package is delivered only to the person mentioned by you as the intended recipient. It gives you a receipt signed by the recipient as proof, but only if you club it with Certified Mail for Priority Mail tracking.
