Principles of Directory Submission

Find out how directory submission rules have changed, and how they have stayed the same
As someone who has been working on the internet for a number of years, I can say that submitting your website to online guides or web directory sites is just as important as ever, In my opinion. I can remember when I first started doing business on the internet. At that particularly time the Yahoo Directory was about the only such guide out there for goodness sake. Boy have times changed and in a hurry. Then again, there were far fewer websites out there as well so I suppose it all sort of balances itself out. However, since there are indeed more web directory sites on the internet than ever before, it is now more imperative that you submit to a quality directory. How do you know when a directory is of a high enough calibre to add your URL to it? In my estimation, if a directory is at least a pr3 or above, it is probably in good standing with the major search engines out there including the Big G, and is therefore likely to pass on pr and relevance to your website in turn. One good example is The Keeb directory

Notice I mentioned that it will pass relevance on to your site. There should probably be an asterisk next to that word. You see, while passing on the pr is basically a given for such a site, the passing on of relevance will be largely determined by the category which you choose for your site. This is the area where you will want to research and make sure you are submitting your site to the best possible category since this can affect your search engine rankings, even though the pr transfer will likely be the same regardless. Of course, I also recommend other link building strategies besides web directory submission exclusively. I suggest that you write articles and submit them with your backlink to the top article directories such as ezinearticles, to place your web url in your forum and newsgroup signatures (where applicable), to open up a blogging account on a free blog host such as blogger, to obtain some reciprical link partners (but not many, since only a small percentage of you incoming url's should be reciprocal according to the latest webmaster theory) and of course on-site search engine optimization and analysis. When you submit your articles to content directories you likewise want to be sure you are submitting to the proper category. These techniques should really be seen as just your starting point. You should also note that it make take a little while for your link building to help you in the rankings. For some reason the search engines need to see them in place for a while before you get credit for them, perhaps as a way to prevent a a quick alteration of the rankings by a manipulative webmaster. Try to keep in mind that these organic techniques are generally more effective than any kinds of mass submission or other manipulative tactic.
