Pride and Proverbs About it
Grasp some words of wisdom and deep insight about pride and its consequences; Solomon’s words of knowledge.
God is love and Jesus Himself proved that with His life on Earth and nowadays with His Holy Spirit which dwells within each sincere believer, yes, HE loves people but He cannot love sin. Solomon puts it in a nutshell in the book of proverbs as follows:
"There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
(1) haughty eyes, (2) a lying tongue, (3) hands that shed innocent blood, (4) a heart that devises wicked schemes, (5) feet that are quick to rush into evil, (6) a false witness who pours out lies and (7) a man who stirs up dissension among brothers." Proverbs 6:16
"The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth." Proverbs 8:13
Quite simple isn’t it? Anyone can understand what God hates and many times it is so easy to identify these sins in other people’s lives, but when it comes to our own…well we seem somewhat better.
How can we hate pride when it is overwhelming? Look at politics, also at all economic systems that invite you to step further and further on the social hierarchy, the competition for more and higher in every field simply gets a hold of us without hesitation or previous notice. How can we keep our hearts humble within this competitive world around us?
Of course you want performance and there is nothing wrong with that, but how can you keep a humble heart in the middle of it all? I will only remind you precious quotes about pride from the proverbial wisdom of Solomon:
" Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Proverbs 16:18
"If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if your heart is full of pride, you only will have the pain of it." Proverbs 9:12
"When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom." Proverbs 11:2
"Pride only breeds quarrels, but with ones who take advice is wisdom." Proverbs 13:10
"In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them." Proverbs 14:3
"The wise man, fearing, keeps himself from evil; but the foolish man goes on in his pride, with no thought of danger." Proverbs 14:16
"The house of the man of pride will be uprooted by the Lord, but he will make safe the heritage of the widow." Proverbs 15:25
"Everyone who has pride in his heart is disgusting to the Lord: he will certainly not go free from punishment." Proverbs 16:5
"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Proverbs 16:18
"Better it is to have a gentle spirit with the poor, than to take part in the rewards of war with men of pride." Proverbs 16:19
"Children's children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their fathers." Proverbs 17:6
"Before destruction the heart of man is full of pride, and before honor goes a gentle spirit." Proverbs 18:12
"When blows overtake the man of pride, the simple will get sense; say sharp words to the wise, and knowledge will be made clear to him." Proverbs 19:25
"Rods are being made ready for the man of pride, and blows for the back of the foolish." Proverbs 19:29
"A poor thing, a poor thing, says he who is giving money for goods: but when he has gone on his way, then he makes clear his pride in what he has got." Proverbs 20:14
"A high look and a heart of pride, of the evil-doer is sin." Proverbs 21:4
"When the man of pride undergoes punishment, the simple man gets wisdom; and by watching the wise he gets knowledge." Proverbs 21:11

"Send away the man of pride, and argument will go out; truly fighting and shame will come to an end." Proverbs 22:10
"Men of pride are the cause of violent acts in a town, but by wise men wrath is turned away." Proverbs 29:8
"A man's pride brings him low, but one of lowly spirit gains honor." Proverbs 29:23

We might not see it but the next step that comes after pride is a huge fall…destruction. Watch your own heart; keep it within the right boundaries!
