Presidential Dollar Error Coins Abound

The new Presidential Dollar coin series has surfaced a number of interesting mint error coins for collectors. From missing edge letters to double edge letters and the latest struck on quarter planchets.
In 2007 the United States Mint began the new Presidential Dollar coin series. This series honors the Nation's Presidents on circulating dollar coins. Four coins per year will be issued featuring Presidents in the order that they served. So far the series has created a number of interesting mint error coins for collectors.

One of the main factors contributing to the unique errors is the edge lettering on the coins. Each coin is supposed to have the mottos "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust" and the date and mint mark inscribed on the edges of the coins. This is a relatively new process for the US Mint, which has presented some problems.

The first errors for the series surfaced when collectors began to find Washington Dollars which were missing their edge lettering. These coins also came to be known as "smooth edge dollars" or "plain edge dollars." Soon after these errors surfaced, more errors were discovered related to the edge lettering. Some coins were found with double edge lettering. The same lettering was applied to coin edges twice. Sometimes the doubled lettering was right side up, and sometime inverted.

Recently there are rumors of another interesting error which may reach circulation. A number of new Madison Dollar coins were apparently struck on planchets (coin blanks) intended for State Quarters. This wrong planchet error will be the most significant. Coins will appear silver gray in color and be thinner and lighter in weight. At this point it is still not known how many of these errors may reach circulation, but collectors should be on the look out starting February 14 when coins are released from banks.

Overall the Presidential Dollar series has created some great opportunities for collectors to learn about and collect mint error coins. From missing edge letters to double edge letters to wrong planchet errors, so far this series seems to have it all.
