President Wants Businesses to Bring Jobs Home
The president wants businesses to move jobs from overseas to the U.S., but appears willing to do next to nothing to make that a legitimate reality.
Ignoring the fact that overzealous taxation and regulations from the U.S. government drove businesses to move operations overseas in the first place, President Obama is on a mission. What he says he wants is for businesses to bring jobs back to the U.S. What he really wants is to be on record saying that he is in favor of U.S. companies bringing jobs back to the U.S. What remains to be seen is whether the president will actually try to push for changes to business regulations and taxes in order to make his so-called desire a reality.
It’s worth noting that during the golden age of American manufacturing, the U.S. both produced the lowest-cost goods in the world and paid the highest wages to workers to do so. Those who argue that cheap labor in foreign countries is the only reason that businesses outsource manufacturing operations are incorrect, and history gives us a clear reminder of that fact. While it’s disingenuous of the president to call for U.S. companies to "bring jobs home" while not doing anything to actually broadly assist them in that goal (i.e. – assist them in general, rather than picking and choosing the companies of his "friends"), it’s not a story you’ll hear in the mainstream media. Rather, reports from the AP and other sources will simply say that the president is a great guy for wanting to help U.S. workers.
In his weekly radio address, the president noted, "We'll hear from business leaders who are bringing jobs back home and see how we can help other businesses follow their lead." He added, "We’re heading in the right direction. And we’re not going to let up." While I don’t know this for certain, I highly suspect that those companies that actually are bringing jobs "back home" are doing so with massive amounts of federal aid. Those companies that are not receiving such government welfare will probably not succeed in moving jobs to the U.S., or they won’t even try. At that point, some politicians, probably including the president, will chastise them for being unpatriotic while, at the same time, not providing any means for them to properly compete in an era of government-subsidized "capitalism." The moral of the story is that it pays to be friends of the politicians in this era of crony capitalism.
