George W. Bush
George W. Bush was the 43rd President of the United States and served from 2001 to 2009. Below is a biography of President George W. Bush followed by news, articles, and quotes.George W. Bush Biography
George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the USA, is the son of George H W Bush, the 41st President of the United States.
Both father and son duo have the remarkable distinction of being responsible for getting their country engulfed in two Gulf Wars.
Early
President George W. Bush was born on 6 July 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut. He has three brothers, Jeb, Neil, and Marvin, and one sister Dorothy. Another sister Robin died at the age of three.
Education
Bush went to school at the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andovers, Massachusetts. Later he attended Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Alcoholism
During his college years and for some years afterwards, President George W. Bush was a hard drinker and reportedly indulged in substance abuse as well. He battled with alcoholism for a long time before eventually kicking the habit in 1986.
Religion
George Bush's family are of the Episcopal faith. On his marriage, he left that to join his wife's United Methodist Church. Later he became a Born Again Christian, a faith he shares with his ally in the War on Terror, British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Marriage and Family Life
President George W. Bush is married to Laura Bush, formerly Laura Welch, whom he met through mutual friends. She was previously a Librarian. They have twin girls, Jenna and Barbara, who both occasionally feature in the gossip columns for problems with alcohol. Neither girl has shown any interest so far in entering the US Military and helping advance their father's war efforts.
The family owns a black Scottish Terrier called Barney.
Business Career
For someone who is frequently derided in the Press for being, shall we say, intellectually challenged, George W Bush has had a pretty successful business career.
He has been a Board Member with Tom Brown Inc., a Senior Partner/CEO with Arbusto Energy, Spectrum 7, and Harken Energy, the Founder and CEO of Bush Exploration, and a General Partner with the Texas Rangers. From all these enterprises, he amassed a great deal of personal fortune.
He was investigated briefly by the SEC for possible Insider Trading, but was not charged with anything.
Military Career
During the Vietnam War, Bush enlisted in the Texas Air National Guard. He received his wings as an F-102 pilot, was promoted to First Lieutenant, and then took an unexplained leave of absence. In short, he never made it to Vietnam to fight the gooks. But, it must be noted, he supported the war like he has supported every war the USA has been involved in modern times – philosophically and politically and from the sidelines. When you are wealthy and well-connected, there is no reason to risk your own life for the wars that you sponsor.
Political Career
The Bush Family has been involved in politics since a long time. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush, was a Senator from Connecticut and his father, as mentioned, was President of the USA from 1989 to 1993.
Bush entered the political arena in 1978 when he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives from Texas. In 1988, Bush helped with his father's presidential campaign. He plunged into politics once more himself in 1994 when he ran for Governor of Texas and surprisingly won.
Although edged with the inevitable controversies, he had a pretty good run as the Governor of Texas and was reelected in 1998, the first Texan Governor to be elected two consecutive times. Aside from reforming the criminal justice system and the education system, his government supported religious organizations and provided funding to 'faith-based initiatives'. Which means he did his bit to force his religion, Christianity, into politics and on the general public.
He next turned his attention to the White House and began campaigning to become President.
Presidential Career
George W Bush became the 43rd President of the United States on 20 January 2001 and was reelected to the post on 20 January 2005. The circumstances in which he became President the first time around are still disputed and considered illegal by some political pundits. Many still consider that it was Al Gore who rightfully won the election.
The Presidency of George W Bush has been even more illuminating than his Governorship of Texas.
He has vetoed against government funding for Stem Cell Research, refused to endorse the Kyoto Agreement, has proposed to build a wall to seal the border with Mexico to put an end to illegal immigration, has legalized unauthorized phone tapping and detaining and interrogating people without warrants.
After the 11 September 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, President George W. Bush launched an illegal 'War on Terror', that five years on is showing no sign of abating. As Governor of Texas, he had about 152 prisoners executed. As President, he has been responsible for over 600,000 deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. Undeterred by the niceties of International Law, he and his political colleagues are now attempting to stir trouble with other nations, namely, North Korea, Iran, Nicaragua, and Somalia.
As a self-proclaimed 'Uniter, Not Divider', President George W Bush has successfully united public opinion worldwide against the aggressive and irresponsible US Foreign Policy.
