President Bush Portrayed Fairly in W
Despite Oliver Stone’s well-documented liberal tendencies, even critics seem to agree that W. is a fair portrait of President George W. Bush from a political perspective.
Oliver Stone’s latest film, "W." is a biopic of President George W. Bush, following his life from his early days as the black sheep of the prestigious Bush family through his two terms as president. Stone also spends quite a bit of time exploring the Bush’s personal transition from a hard-partying frat boy to a religious convert that navigated a highly successful business and political career.
While you can argue with his politics and some of his decision-making, it’s hard to question the success that Bush has had while moving through business and political circles.
When trailers of the new film began appearing, most people assumed a Michael Moore-type satire of Bush both personally and politically, portraying him as the nearly cartoon-like figure that he has become to the Liberal left. Instead, Stone seems to have gone to great lengths to present an objective portrait of the current president, albeit within the context of the factual events that have come to define his presidency and his legacy in American history.
Stone also seems to have steered clear of offering any of the conspiracy theories for which he has become famous, through such previous films as "JFK" and "Platoon", among others.
That said, Stone certainly will be exercising some creative license as he tells the story of George W. Bush’s life and rise to power. The movie centers on Bush’s relationship with his father, the first President Bush. The dynamic between the father and the son is the vehicle that moves the film along and provides some of the light through with viewers will ultimately see and judge W – the man and the movie.
