Preschool Themes
Rachel loved children and that is the reason this petite and young lady spent most of her time with the children that roamed the streets, uneducated and hungry. Today, Rachel and the children were seated on mats that lined the floor with paint, brushes, scissors, colorful paper and glue, smiling, humming, singing loudly and making changes to the classroom according to the new preschool theme that had been selected.

Here are some preschool themes:

Animals

Spider
To begin with, you can let your children act out the rhyme "Little Miss Muffet" and also show them videos and pictures on spiders.

They can create their own spider too, here is how:
  • Take a large plastic black trash bag.
  • Then have the children fill it up with crumpled newspaper.
  • Now cut eight strips of black plastic from another trash bag and let the children tape them on to the spider’s body.
  • To create the spider’s eyes use some aluminum foil.
Ladybug
You can let the children make their own ladybugs by painting walnut shells with red color and then adding black spots with a marker when the paint is dry.

Things you will need to make ladybug snacks:
  • Some round biscuits
  • Raisins
  • Bottles of Jam
  • A few butter knives
  • Some paper plates
Now let them take some round biscuits and spread some jam over it. Once that is done let them add some raisins to resemble the ladybug’s spots.

Parts of the Body

For this theme, you can make the children trace out their hands and feet on to pieces of paper. You can then give them color too add in details, such as rings, nail polish and other decoration.

If you like, you can also give the children old magazines and newspapers and have them cut out facial features from them. They can then glue these pictures onto paper plates. Give them yarn to stick to the paper plates as hair.

Desert

Supply the children with some green clay or green play dough to make cactus plants. After they have completed the plants, they can use thin drinking straws for spines.

Things you will to make a desert wall hanging are:
  • Photocopies of desert animals
  • Some cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Ribbon
  • Staplers
To begin with, photocopy pictures of all animals found in the desert, for example snakes, lizards and camels. Then ask the children to cut the shape and glue them on to some cardboard. Once it is dry staple them onto strips of ribbon. Make a hook with the ribbon on the top. Display it on the classroom wall for all to see.

Flowers

For this preschool theme, take the children out into the garden in springtime and let them see the flowers in full bloom! Talk to them about the various flowers and colors and introduce them to words like aroma. Now, give the children water colors, markers and crayons to make a garden of their own.

Apart from using the flannel boards to display their artwork you can also use them to match pairs of flowers shapes that are made using different kinds of fabrics.

Easter

With Easter just around the corner, here are activities that you can have around an Easter theme.

You can take a large oval piece of cardboard and decorate it as an Easter egg with help from the children. Once it looks beautiful and ready, cut the cardboard Easter egg into puzzle pieces and let the children put all the pieces into place.

Another thing you can do is bring some hard boiled eggs to class and let the children paint their own eggs using food coloring. They can eat the eggs during break!
