Preparing for the Winter Heat - Ways to Save Money

Prepare in advance for the winter and you'll reap the savings. Learn ways to lower your bills and stay warm.
The winters the last for years have been extremely cold and it's easy to be caught off guard without having thought out ways to save. First of all, you may have turned off the switch for your furnace or the pilot out may be out. Don't panic if the furnace seems to not be working.

If you use oil to heat your furnace, some companies will offer a special where they will visit and check everything. This can be a savings having them check the air filter,change oil filter and arrange the right flame. Efficiency is important and filters are important to have checked. Is your furnace energy starred?

Put some heating tape on the oil lines that go from your tank to your house (assuming your oil tank is outside). If not, it can freeze and this winter Vermont is predicted to be very cold in the month of February. You don't want to deal with this in mid-winter when it is very cold and it needs to be done . Also generally parts for furnaces and boilers and in less competition in the seasons before winter so take care of things earlier in case the whole town is in the same dilemma.

Do you have a programmable thermostat? That can be a money saver and you can make the house cool while everyone is out. Drop the thermostat one degree and test it out. It can be a nice savings and getting some warm clothing will make it tolerable. For a room that the family is in at night that is common, you can bring in a portable heater to avoid having to heat the whole house in the event you can't specify where the heat goes.

In yoga, there is a breath called Breath of Fire that makes your body warm. You can also run in place for a few minutes to heat your body up and get both exercise and a bit of an extra furnace for a while.

Don't forget you can also save in winter by watching your appliances energy expenditures. For instance, you can turn off your computer when not at home. The monitor can use more energy than you think. Also be aware that the waterbed heater can be lowered during the day when you aren't there. Simple tips add up to nice savings that you can use for evenings of eating out, bowling , movies and entertainment.
