Preparation H is the Hot New Drug

Preparation H, the antidote for hemorrhoids, has hit the NY club scene to make the bodies of partiers look buff.

New York club goers who are a little vain about that extra bit of puffiness have come up with a new solution. It’s not an extra trip to the gym – it’s Preparation H. That’s right - the age old remedy for hemorrhoids has found its way into the hottest clubs in Manhattan as a quick cure all for those who feel the need to be a little more buff. The trend is to slather the creamy medication all over one’s body before hitting the dance floor. Supposedly, the ingredients in the lotion will shrink swollen and fatty tissue.

In a world of quick fixes, this one has to be one of the silliest. Considering that Preparation H was once listed as the most shoplifted item in America due to its embarrassment factor, it’s hard to believe that there are people out there who are buying it in bulk. One has to wonder if someone is making a killing selling the ointment at night clubs since it is unlikely that someone would be willing to excuse himself to make a run to the drug store. Not for Preparation H, anyway.

The main ingredient in the topical ointment is phenylephrine HCL, which is designed to shrink the swollen tissue caused by hemorrhoids. The theory is that the phenylephrine HCL works by constricting the blood vessels that surround the affected area. It has been discovered that it will also shrink other tissue.

Using Preparation H as a remedy for swelling isn’t new. The trick has been used for years by body builders preparing for competition and women who wish to reduce puffiness around their eyes.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a medical contributor to FOX News, thinks the whole idea is ridiculous.

"It doesn't even work that well for hemorrhoids," said Siegel. "I find in my practice it has to be combined with hydrocortisone. The notion of phenylephrine is problematic at best. It's a placebo effect."

Siegel also told FOXNews.com that phenylephrine can produce uncomfortable side effects, including rashes and elevated blood pressure. This should be of particular concern to those who already suffer from hypertension.

Since the use of Preparation H is so hot, it’s no surprise that an unofficial study has already made its appearance on the blog Clublife, written by New York bouncer, blogger and author Rob Fitzgerald..
