Powdered Sugar Frosting

Frosting, otherwise known as icing, is one of the best parts of a cake, for many. There are many different types of frosting like caramel frosting, butter cream frosting, powdered sugar frosting, etc. A simple, but, delicious frosting that can be prepared easily, with powdered sugar. Here are some tips for making such frosting.

How to Make Powdered Sugar Frosting

As we all know, powdered sugar is a very fine form of sugar that is also known as frosting sugar, icing sugar, etc. Apart from powdered sugar, you have to use certain other ingredients, so as to prepare icing recipes.

Recipe I

This is a basic version of powdered sugar frosting. In order to prepare this recipe, you require two cups of powdered sugar, two tablespoons of milk and ½ teaspoon vanilla essence. Sift the powdered sugar and add the milk that is combined with vanilla essence. The next step is to mix them well, till the mixture reaches the desired consistency. This icing is mostly found in thin consistency, so that it drips down the sides of the cakes or cookies. Once done, wait for at least two hours, before using the cake. If you want a frosting with a thick consistency, then, use heavy whipping cream instead of milk. All you have to do is to mix a cup of powdered sugar with two tablespoons of heavy whipping cream, to form the frosting. If the mixture is too thick, then, add one or two tablespoons of heavy whipping cream, till the mixture gets the desired consistency.

Ingredients
  • Powdered sugar - 2½ cups
  • Corn syrup - 1 tablespoon
  • Butter (softened) - 1 tablespoon
  • Vanilla extract - ½ teaspoon
  • Water - 2 tablespoons
  • Food coloring (optional) - a few drops
How to Prepare

Take a bowl and combine all the ingredients, except the food color. Beat the mixture, till it gets soft and moist and reaches the desired consistency. If it is too thick, add some more water and whisk once again. Once done, add the food coloring and beat the mixture well. If you want to prepare a powdered sugar frosting for cinnamon roll recipes, then, add some water, to make the frosting thin, so that it can be used for glazing.

You may prepare a flavorful frosting with four cups of powdered sugar, four tablespoons of milk, one tablespoon orange juice, one teaspoon of any flavoring and a few drops of food color. All you have to do is to mix the flavoring, orange juice and two tablespoons of milk, along with three cups of powdered sugar. You may add the remaining milk or powdered sugar, for making the mixture, in the desired consistency.

Some people use cream of tartar for preparing powdered sugar icing. As per that recipe, you have to use ¼ cup cream of tartar for three cups of powdered sugar. Sift both of them together and add a cup of softened butter. Blend them well, before adding ¼ cup heavy cream and one or two teaspoons of vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture, till it gets smooth, soft and fluffy. You can use it for cake decorating.
