Powder Room Problems: What To Do With Small Bathrooms

A small space like a powder room can be difficult to design and decorate. By embracing the small space instead of fighting it, you can create a focal point for your home.
Small bathrooms or powder rooms can be problematic for people who are used to making the most of their home space with design and décor. While you can still choose appropriately sized fixtures for your powder room, it’s also a good idea to embrace the intimacy of the room when working on a small bathroom remodeling project.

For instance, instead of painting a powder room in a light neutral color, which is usually thought to make small rooms look larger, try a richer jewel tone. A full violet or a rich turquoise on one or more walls will increase the intimate feeling of the room and will add a lush feel. Additionally, while ceilings usually get a coat of white or lightly colored paint, try picking a richly patterned wall paper for the ceiling. A colorful oriental or floral print can make the ceiling a focal point and enhance the feel of the powder room as an intimate and luxurious little pocket of the house. For a more classic look, a toile patterned paper can bring cranberry, navy or forest green tones into your bathroom, without doing a fully colored paper. Wallpapering one small wall in a richly patterned paper can have the same effect.

Another trend that can work in the small space of a powder room and that continues the idea of a richly appointed setting is a metallic finish. A touch of gold in a wall paper, or a brushed gold in the fixtures of the room, can catch the light and the eye in an ornamental powder room. You can also make the ceiling a focal point by giving it a coat of metallic paint - a ceiling that reflects light can open the room upward.

By embracing the small spaces of a powder room or small bathroom, you can achieve an intimate and stylish space that won’t be limited by its restricted dimensions.
