Post-Bankruptcy, Debt is Discharged, Now What?

Now that my debt has been discharged, what should I do in order to not make the same mistake again?
Okay, you have been through a financial turmoil. You have been through the constant badgering of the creditors calling you trying to collect the debt. The threats they make when they call you. As if you didn’t feel bad enough that you couldn’t pay, they always find a way to make you feel worse. Then you made a decision to file a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and that in itself is another humiliating procedure. But you somehow got through it.

Hey, at least the creditors stopped calling. But then comes the court date, the meeting of the creditors. Now you wonder, who will show up to continue to humiliate you. All the while, your lawyers are telling you not to worry. Somehow, deep inside, you still feel like a failure. You get through the court date and you wait to be discharged. That usually takes another 4-6 weeks. Then the day comes, you receive your discharge papers by mail. Yes, you’re free from the debt, the humiliation, now what?

What do you do to keep yourself from going through this humiliation again? The U.S. Bankruptcy laws now make you complete two credit counseling courses in order to be discharged. These courses have been found to help people to look at their debt, see what happened and face the turmoil before being discharged. The debtor has the ability to take these courses online, by paying a fee. Some may see the benefit in being made to take the courses right away. Others are just going through the motions, trying to get through the bankruptcy procedures. Either way, you are forced to visualize your financial turmoil.

The good news is, now you have a fresh start. The bad news is there will be other creditors that will begin to send you credit cards, automobile checks; to come pick up a new car, etc. You see, your bankruptcy discharge is public knowledge, and creditors know this. They will pull your name from a list of people who have recently filed bankruptcy and were discharged. They will send you more credit. Be careful! Do not take the bait! Now is the time to learn how to live without credit cards, personal loans, etc. Since filing, you have probably been living this way for a couple of months now. Keep up the good work. Do not fall back into the trap of the debt.

Although the majority of your debt has been discharged, we are in a recession. You still have debt to pay. Make your money work for you and make more money if you need. If you filed bankruptcy because you were laid-off, cut-back, or down-sized in your job; then you are looking for a way to make an income.
