Portugal, an independent nation along the Atlantic Ocean at the southwestern edge of Europe, occupies about one-sixth of the Iberian Peninsula, which it shares with Spain, its only neighbor. The Azores and Madeira Islands are Portuguese autonomous regions. Continental Portugal covers 88,944 square miles, the Azores and Madeira Islands have a combined area of 3,041 square miles, and there is 404 square miles of inland water. Mainland Portugal has a north-south extent of about 575 km (360 mi.) and an east-west extent of almost 195 km (120 mi). Its highest point is 1,993 m (6,539 ft).
Portugal’s Carnation Revolution of 1974
The Carnation Revolution, which ousted the fascist government of Portugal in 1974, is a remarkable example of the level of political change that even a repressed people can achieve without the use of violence. Unlike many other nonviolent revolutions, the Carnation Revolution was a full-fledged military coup, but the insurgents didn’t resort to fighting to bring democracy to the nation.
