Breakfast time for Australians includes light food; this may differ upon the region and for areas that enjoy colder weather, porridge is generally served at breakfast. Otherwise, the most popular forms of breakfast food are cereals and fruits. People who believe in ‘having a breakfast like a king’; also include fried bacon, sausages, beans and eggs for their breakfast. Dinnertime would find Australians feasting on roast meat, pizzas, vegetables, salads etc. Desserts are the most important feature of Australian cuisine. There are a wide number of lip-smacking desserts popular in Australia.
There are certain specific foods that are extremely popular in Australia apart from the various foodstuffs mentioned so far. Here’s a quick look:
Vegemite: Vegemite is extremely popular amongst Australians. This is to the extent that it is considered to be a national food item today. Vegemite is available across Australia and is exported to other countries as well. Vegemite is actually a brown colored paste which is used as a spread on sandwiches as well as crackers. At times, vegemite is also used as a filling for pastries. Vegemite is known to be a rich source of Vitamin B. It is basically made from yeast extract. Dr. Cyril P. Callister first created Vegemite in 1923. Vegemite has a smooth but sticky texture and is slightly bitter to taste!
Pie Floater: The pie floater is unique to areas of South Australia. A pie floater is actually a meat pie that is served with tomato sauce. It is always placed in thick green pea soup. Generally, pie floaters are available late in the night at caravans parked around the street. This is mainly seen in areas of Adelaide. The National Trust of Australia gave the pie floater the status of a South Australian Heritage icon in the year 2003.
Chiko Roll: The Chiko roll is yet another popular food of Australia. Frank McEnroe invented it. This was initially created around the Chinese egg roll. Chiko roll is thick roll that contains ingredients such as celery, barley, cabbage, boned mutton, rice, carrot and spices for taste. This deep fried roll was initially known as chicken roll until it was later shortened to the current name. Chiko rolls became popular with time and from a small unit, Frank McEnroe went on to a larger factory and very soon, many outlets sold Chiko rolls due to their sheer popularity. Such was their popularity that Chiko rolls were even exported to Japan. Currently, the recent lots of Chiko rolls are being manufactured at Bathurst in New South Wales.
Australian Meat Pie: Australian meat pie is famous all over and there are many manufactures that cite various references that do not clearly indicate when this dish was actually invented. Hot pies are actually a favorite with all Australians hence currently pies are easily available in many areas of Australia. Such is the popularity of the Australian meat pie that a Great Aussie Pie contest is celebrated to attract various pie makers. The prize is given to those pie makers who have met the quality standards. Typically, an Australian meat pie contains minced meat with some gravy. It is also served with onions.
Lamington: Lamington is a tempting traditional Australian cube shaped dessert, which contains a generous helping of chocolate icing. They are also served with strawberry jam with desiccated coconut as topping. Lamingtons are extremely popular and is available in many bakeries in Australia. This yummy dessert is also named as Queensland’s favorite icon.
