Police Officers Arrested in Connecticut After Abusing Immigrants
Four police officers in East Haven, Connecticut have been arrested after accusations of assault against immigrants were leveled.
Four East Haven, Connecticut police officers were arrested yesterday by the FBI on charges that they assaulted illegal immigrants and that they covered up a series of constant abuses of immigrants in a New Haven. Among those arrested was the president of the local police union. According to the federal indictment, the four officers assaulted individuals when they were handcuffed, performed unlawful searches of Latino businesses and intimidated immigrants, advocates and witnesses and other officers who tried to report the abuses.
One Hispanic business owner in the area is happy that the arrests have finally been made. Luis Rodriguez, who runs Los Amigos Grocery store noted, "They should have to pay, not with many years, but enough to make an example of them. They should not abuse their power. All I ever wanted was to be left in peace." Indeed, that is all that most people want.
Noted Janice Fedarcyk, assistant director of the New York office of the FBI, "In simple terms, these defendants behaved like bullies with badges." The four men charges are Officers Dennis Spaulding, David Cari and Jason Zullo, as well as Sgt. John Miller, who is president of the police union. Predictably, attorneys for the disgraced officers are attempting to hide their clients behind empty platitudes. It is not the first time such issues have arisen in the East Haven police department, which has been in the news on previous occasions for apparent civil rights violations, including an excessive force charge resulting from the fatal shooting of a black man after a chase.
