SWAT officers raided an Aurora, Colorado home after a gunman therein fired shots at the officers on Saturday. When police finally entered the home, they found the dead gunman as well as three others dead. The suspect's name was withheld from the press, but he engaged in a nearly six-hour showdown with police after his neighbors reported hearing gunshots at about 3 A.M. inside the townhome. It remains unknown whether the suspect took his own life or was shot by officers.
The suspect fired at police after they approached his home with an armored vehicle and fired tear gas into the home at around 8:15 A.M. "After we arrived on scene, there were no more shots fired until he fired at us," police Sergeant Cassidee Carlson said. "During this time he was all over the house. He moved furniture. He was throwing things. He was agitated. He was irrational."
The three others found dead in the home were killed prior to the standoff, but police currently have no specific indication of their identities. "We have an idea of who they are, but we obviously want to confirm their identities with the coroner," noted Carlson. The incident occurred just four miles from the Aurora Mall, where 12 people were shot and killed and dozens others wounded during a movie theater shooting on July 20 last year. This newest round of violence is sure to touch off yet more calls for gun control, thus further diverting Americans' attention from the fact that something about the way of life in this country is slowly but surely seeping into people's minds and affecting their ability to lead normal, happy lives.
