Police Find New Uses for Fingerprint Scanning technology

Biometric technology has been use in many ways to distinguish one person from another by capitalizing on fingerprints, irises in our eyes, speech patterns and more. Now, law enforcement is looking to use fingerprint technology on the job verses taking someone into the station for printing.
People have used biometric technology to protect their computers, laptops and other secured entryways to prevent their files and secure areas from unwanted visitors. Fingerprint scanners like the popular Digital Persona U.are.U are commonly found attached to computers via USB cable or installed into computers or time clocks for fool proof access or time and attendance tools.

A Digital Persona U.are.U fingerprint scanner is used like a person would use a password. Instead of entering a cryptic code, a person places their finger onto a glowing red oval screen that is on top of the device. The device is either installed into a larger computer system or it is attached using a USB cable. With fingerprint scanning software, a computer will hold the match of your finger within the system and only your fingerprint- once matched up with the identical match in the database will unlock the system.

Because a system like the Digital Persona U.are.U fingerprint scanner is light weight, compact and performs well, the system is being used for other reasons than a physical password for businesses and personal use.

Recently, police have found other reasons to include the Digital Persona U.are.U fingerprint scanner while on the job. It’s been called to attention that instead of taking the time to bring a suspect down to the station to have their fingerprints taken, police could match a person’s fingerprints right there at the scene of the arrest.

Of course, the suspect’s prints would have to be on the national database to register as a felon. With the right software database, a search could hold more than 6 million fingerprints on record and within minutes, produce a result saving time, money and inconvenience for both the suspect and the police. This also increases the time police will spend "on duty in the frontline" instead of down at the station waiting for results. A Florida news station also reported police said that it would virtually eliminate the possibility to arrest the wrong person.

Fingerprint scanning technology inside police cruisers may indeed save money, help police arrest the right people and save tax payers money. If further test trials prove positive, we may be asked to show our thumbs before our driver’s licenses for traffic offenses.
