Poker is a Sin?
Facts that are real, we discuss for the love of the game, for the love of God, for the love people. See what the bible says about gambling.
Poker is for everyone, male/female, kids/parents dogs/cats no matter what we try to do, to prevent this we can not do anything…why is that ? because is a great card game and we love it!
So here we start ! Gambling is an addiction to over 5 million adults in America.
$500 BILLION is spent by gamblers in annual wages. First point is that not one of the bible verses quoted here actually say that gambling is a sin. They seem to be interpreted that way. What you are searching for, my biblical scholars, is the sin of Greed. Which I would argue is probably the least incentive for most people who gamble.
I think that even as a priest you can enjoy this game, a priest who also enjoys playing poker, should we concern that anyone would see a priest playing poker, and think that something like that could cause anyone any sort of scandal?!
However, those people that know this priest would still know that he is a priest. His intentions could be completely honorable but we also have to bear in mind the example that we are providing to our parishioners. Priests are held to a higher standard and his actions/reactions/interactions will be under a microscope.
Hopefully, he will be able to an example of Christ to all as the world watches. However, seeking fame and fortune places him in a precarious position. Is God really first and foremost in his intentions or is something else being placed first among his needs and wants?
As for Father's "gambling" leading others to sin, well, I think a church leader also has a responsibility to treat their congregation like intelligent human beings. Any intelligent person would realize that Father playing a game to raise funds for his church isn't him giving everyone an "OK" to spend all their life's savings on gambling.
Plus, anyone who's played poker can agree that poker is more about having fun than making money. You can play poker for free for instance, get your free poker bonus now. It's a well made card game that requires skill, and just happens to have money involved. If somebody's going to try to "make it big" gambling, I imagine they'll go for black jack, roulette, or some other game.
People addicted to gambling and need help, as there are people addicted to many, many other things (food, video games, sex, alcohol, etc, etc - all at a cost of some type or another). But every person playing a poker game or watching someone else, including a church or otherwise authority figure play a poker game, is not addicted. There are already many, many doors open to all types of addiction, and it's ultimately up to each individual to use faith and his own values to avoid these doors, or to seek help when addiction does occur.
I am not talking about just playing games - this is gambling: to play a game for money or property. Gambling is the desire to acquire wealth. You are calling it "improve their means of living". The Bible calls it the love of money.
The thing to remember about gambling is that all those casinos weren't built by investors goodwill, they are built from the gamblers who lose. The odds are against winning in gambling - it's the lure of money that draws people in.
