Poison Ivy Treatment

Treating poison ivy is the only way to get rid of that horrible itch.
One of the worst plants to come across is the plant known as poison ivy. It contains a sap, called urushiol, which will attach to the skin when you come in contact with the plant. This sap like poison then begins to seep into the pours of your skin and into your blood stream. While this may sound like some former of deadly poison, it actually only creates a rather irritating and itchy rash. The rash usually occurs at the point of contact, but for those who are more allergic to the plant can spread to any part of the body. In order to stop or rid yourself of poison ivy you need to treat it in a few simple ways.

You have to understand the symptoms of poison ivy before you try to treat it. What happens when someone contracts poison ivy is that the sap from the plant attaches to their skin or clothing. This sap then finds its way onto the skin and begins to seep into the pores. You will begin to notice an irritation at the point of contact, which may then transform into redness and a something along the lines of a rash. If not treated soon enough the lines of red bumps begin to form causing intense irritation and itchiness.

What you can do before you begin to notice any of these symptoms, but still believe you have come in contact with poison ivy is give your self a good cleansing. A shower will not work and may only make the condition worse. What you will want to do is clean the area with rubbing alcohol and cold water. Do not rub, as this may force the urushiol deeper into the skin, but rather damp it.

After cleaning you may need to wait a day or so to see if you have done a good enough job to rid your self of the poison ivy. After a few days you should begin to notice a formation of bumps or a rash. Try not to scratch that area as best as possible. This will only cause more pain and irritation, and may even cause the poison ivy to spread to other body parts.

Once you begin to see a distinct rash and the itching has begun you can pretty much determine that you have poison ivy. At this point there are a few things you can do to try and contain the poison ivy, and even better get rid of it. First try and buy some calamine cream, and apply it to the infected area. This cream is used to sooth the itching, but may not do much to eliminate the rash itself.

In order to guarantee that you solve this problem you may need to consult a doctor. He or she should be able to prescribe you with medicine that dries out the poison ivy and causes it to eventually go away. This for many people may be the only successful way to get rid of poison ivy.

Poison ivy can be a serious pain, but it is easily solved. Hopefully you never come across it, but if you think you have use some of these tips to get rid of it.
