Plus One. How to Catch a Cloud - vi

How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
INCOMING MESSAGE:
Hey, I'll be there in an hour, don't you dare leave!

She stared at the message she had received two hours ago. Packed and ready to go, she decided to go ahead with her plan to leave without him. Her pride ached a bit, thinking about how he didn't follow through with his message after she had given him the benefit if the doubt and waited an hour.

Sitting outside soaking up the sub and the remnants of her Spring weekend away from home on the porch she waited for him.

But nothing happened. No one came.

So, she opened the door to her brother's townhouse, said her goodbyes, assured the couple that she had the list of things to do for the wedding and went on her way.

On the train ride home, she reminded herself that no real plans had been made between them for the trip home. It's fine, she thought. At least she only paid half the fare to begin with.

Her mind wandered and wondered where he slept. Sure he was a grown up already and should be fine, but she couldn't help but feel somewhat concerned. She didn't show it often, but she knew he wasn't what he seemed. He's misunderstood.

The train came to a halt and she snapped out of her thoughts.

I don't care!
I don't care!
I don't care!

Sure, a voice inside her head mocked, keep saying it - you might believe it for two seconds.

Two more hours of this bumpy ride and she'd be at the station. Another hour and she'd be home. Gosh, this little trip made wore her out more than helped her relax.

Ara was sick of listening to her mundane thoughts that she took out the list of tasks that were to be divided between Charlie and her.

The list read like this:

I'll try, but I won't make any promises, she thought as she read the last line of Georgia's letter.
The wedding would be in a good six months time. Provided Charlie got his act together and did his part, things should turn like clockwork. She mentally crossed her fingers.
As she crossed the street to catch a local bus to take her home, she resolved to call him up to tell him what needed to be done. She worked it out so that they could do things independently and would require little meet up time.
Ring. Ring.
She had just sat down when she took out her phone to answer.
"Hello?"

"Didn't you get my message?" A slightly irritated Charlie inquired.
"Yes. And I waited for a little over an hour and you didn't come," her heart fluttered real quick unsure why she felt like crying.
"Why didn't you call me?"
"Why? You told me you'd be there. You weren't so I went home by myself." Realizing she wasn't alone, she smiled apologetically at the driver and lowered her voice.
"What do you want anyway?! I'm home."
"I know, I'm here waiting for you."

She stepped out of the bus in time see him come down her porch steps.
"Great," she muttered forgetting he was still on the line.
"I heard that."
She disconnected the call and wondered what he was up to.
He stopped just a few feet away from her and she kept walking towards the house. His face was unreadable.
"Go home Charlie."
"I am home."
"I mean your home. Not mine."
"I will in a bit."

"Why are you here?"
"What's on the list for us to do? We can get our heads together on it now," he suggested with a smirk spreading into a full on smile.
"You're crazy. Here," she said as she busted out the list Georgia had prepared. She tore the paper in half and shoved it into his hand.
"Aww, does this mean it's an independent study?"
"Yes. Good night, Charlie."
"Trying to dismiss me just like that, huh?"
"Oh, was it not obvious?"
She spun away, but was stopped when Charlie's hand caught her elbow.
"Ara..."

When she turned to face him her irritation grew to guilt. Why did she always let herself get irritated when he's done nothing.
"What?" she asked a bit too harsh.
"What did I do to make you loathe me so much?"
She couldn't look him in the eye. She knew that once she looked up he would already be gone.
"Nothing," she quietly whispered her answer to the darkness.
