Places to Visit in New York

When asked, most people world over would mention New York as one of the most coveted places. The city of Manhattan skyscrapers, flashing lights, lively city nights and ever busy streets, New York surely never sleeps. Located on United States' eastern coast, it is the most populous city in this country with over 8 million residents in the proper New York city area alone. For those visiting New York, there may be lot of guidance required as there are countless number of places that you would love to see. So, one has to select the most deserving ones. So, here is our compilation.

click image to enlarge	The Statue of Liberty: No trip to the US can be complete without a visit to the Statue of Liberty. The first picture that comes to our mind at the thought of New York is that of the Statue of Liberty. The 151 feet high statue is located on the 12 acre Liberty island overlooking the New York harbor. It is located at slightly more than one mile from Lower Manhattan. The only way of visiting the Statue of Liberty is by the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Ferry system, as using private vessels is forbidden. Operated by Statue cruises, these ferries ply from New York as well as New Jersey and one round trip ferry comprises visits to both the islands.
Ground Zero: Another must-see in New York is the site of the dreadful terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, also known as Ground Zero. On this fateful day two passenger planes hijacked by terrorist were rammed in to the twin towers of the World Trade Center, which was a famous landmark of NYC. Both the towers collapsed within a couple of hours killing about 3,000 people. A memorial called 'Reflecting Absence' has been erected in the honor of the victims of the September 11 terror attacks. The memorial consists of a field of trees along with the footprints of the twin towers. click image to enlarge	Empire State Building: One of the most recognizable feature of the New York city skyline is the Empire State building. Housing 102 floors, it is the tallest structure in NYC and has been an international landmark for almost 80 years now. It remained the world's tallest from 1931 to 1973 when WTC pipped it for the top spot. It continues to capture the imaginations and amazement of a lot of curious visitors coming to the city. This great skyscraper has iconic significance not only in the history of New York City but also the United States.
Times Square: They say that if you stand in the Times Square long enough, you can meet every person you've known in your lifetime. Times square is a major intersection in Manhattan and one of the busiest part of the city. Today, this intersection has become one of the iconic landmarks of NYC and is defined by the spectaculars, animated, digital advertisements. click image to enlarge	Madison Square Garden: Madison Square Garden is one of the world's most famous arenas. It is located in Manhattan on seventh avenue between 31st and 33rd streets. Also known as MSG or just The Garden, it is home to the New York Rangers NHL team, NBA's New York Knicks, and the New York Liberty of the WNBA. Many high rated and popular music and entertainment concerts take place at the Madison Square Garden which hosts around 320 events a year.
St Patrick's Cathedral: St. Patrick's Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of New York, His Excellency Timothy M. Dolan. It is the United States' largest decorated neo-gothic-style catholic cathedral church and the country's Catholic life revolves around this cathedral. It is located on the eastern part of Fifth Avenue and between the 50th and 51st Streets in midtown Manhattan. click image to enlarge	Central Park: Central Park is a massive green cover occupying a mammoth 843 acres right in the heart of the Manhattan in New York City. It hosts approximately 25 million visitors every year and is one of the most widely visited parks in the country. This is one of the best places to visit in New York for children. There are excellent touring and amusements activities like carriage horses, pedicabs, sports, rock climbing, etc. inside the park and can this place be an ideal place for a day spend.
United Nations Headquarters: The Headquarters of United Nations (UN) is located on an 18-acre site on the East of Manhattan. This is an international zone i.e. it belongs to all member countries and not to the US. To support this, the United Nations headquarters has its own dedicated security force, fire department and even a postal service. Many guided tours of the headquarter are operated daily from the General Assembly public lobby. A member of the international staff guide and explains the tourists of the work of the United Nations and its various organizations. click image to enlarge	Grand Central Terminal: The Grand Central Terminal (GCT), also known as the Grand Central, is a railway terminal station between 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. It is world's largest train station in terms of number of platforms - 44 which cater to as many as 67 tracks between them. It is a two level terminal, both underground ones. The upper level has 41 tracks and the lower section has 26.
Chrysler Building: The Chrysler building was the world's tallest building for just a year from 1930 to 1931 when its Manhattan neighbor, the Empire State building took the top spot. But, it is still the world's tallest brick building. Its most peculiar feature of the tower is the culminating, beautifully tapered, stainless steel crown that supports the famous spire at the peak. The Chrysler Building is a masterpiece of Art Deco style of architecture.
