Top 10 Places to Visit in Italy
Well, let me just say that 10 'places' in Italy would be too few! So I'm giving a list of 10 cities or areas, which are truly the pride of the nation.
Rome: All roads lead to Rome! Rome is the capital and one of the oldest cities in Italy. It is said that the way most of Europe has shaped out can be attributed to the Roman civilization, whose capital is this very beautiful city. Rome also houses the prime seat of Christianity, the Vatican City. Along with the Sistine Chapel, Rome also houses the Pantheon and the Colosseum. Rome is a culturally rich city, and is one of the best places to visit in Italy with kids.
Milan: Known as the fashion capital of the world, Milan is the economic and financial capital of Italy. The Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in Milan, and is home to the Last Supper Mural. The Castello Sforzesco is a castle in Milan and has a lot of the city's art and collections on display. For the football fans, there is the grand San Siro, home of both Internazionale and AC Milan, two of the best football clubs in the country.
Florence: This Italian city is known as the birthplace of the Renaissance art movement and is home to Michelangelo's very famous work, David. Florence is located in the wine country of Italy, Tuscany and hence will be on the Italy travel itinerary for those who love Italian wine. There is also the Basilica di Santa Croce which attracts people from all over the world.
Venice: One of the places that is a permanent fix on an Italy vacation is Venice. For those who do not know, Venice is a city which is built around so many canals. Boats are one of the many modes of transportation in Venice. One could go on a romantic trip to old Venice in a boat, and is one of the places to visit in Italy that you just can't miss. And don't let the canals take all of your time, you can't afford to miss St. Mark's Square!
Sicily: Notoriously known as the home to the Italian mafia, Sicily is geographically the largest place in Italy. It is also one of the most beautiful regions of Italy. One of the most famous cities in Sicily is Palermo, where you can go any time of the year. Palermo has hosted several kingdoms in the past and hence you can find people of various cultures in Palermo and all of Sicily.
Turin: This city is located in Northern Italy and is located in the Italian Alps. Turin is one of the most wonderful places to visit in Italy in winter. It is home to the car-maker Fiat and Juventus, one of the best football clubs in Europe.
Capri: One of the less known places to visit in Italy, Capri has been a vacation destination since the time of the Roman republic. It is located in southern Italy off the Gulf of Naples. It is a lovely island and is one of the best places to visit in Italy for a honeymoon.
Sorrento: Staying on the south side of Italy, Sorrento is one of the places you have to visit while you are in Italy. Sorrento is a beautiful area which has been a getaway for several Spanish rulers. It is best known for its beaches. Along with tourism, agriculture is a thriving activity in Sorrento.
Abruzzo: Abruzzo is one of the lesser known areas in Italy, located on the western coast of Italy. Abruzzo is an area which is packed with it all, Alpine adventure and lovely beaches. It also has many of medieval and Renaissance architectures, and is said to have Italy's best preserved original landscape.
San Gimignano: And to end the list of the places to visit in Italy, there is San Gimignano. San Gimignano is a small medieval hill town in Tuscany and a place to visit on your trip to Florence. It is a quieter city compared to Florence and will take you back in time and give you a feel of what Italy was like in the medieval times.
