How to Pickle Onions
Pickled onions are very easy to make and can be added to a number of other dishes for its unique taste. It takes a few days to acquire that tangy taste, only to stay for months together and not perish like other fruits and vegetables. Pickling is a very famous art and well-known throughout the world, so take a look at what has to be done in order to get those yummy pickled onions.
Ingredients
- 1 kg pickling onions
- ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
- ½ teaspoon coriander seeds
- ½ teaspoon black peppercorns
- ½ teaspoon dried chili flakes
- Salt and Sugar
- 1 liter malt vinegar
If you want you can peel the onions, or simply leave them with the skin, but it is advised you peel them to get a clean, undamaged vegetable. Sprinkle the salt over the peeled onions and leave them overnight in a vessel. Rinse the onions the next day and dry them with a kitchen towel. In another sauce pan, add all the spices along with vinegar and sugar and heat it over low flame only to dissolve the sugar. Stir it well but don't let the mixture boil. Now sterilize some glass pickle jars and pack the onions into them and then pour the heated mixture onto them. More on pickled peppers.
Fill the jar with the liquid and make sure there are no air spaces, seal it and let the jar cool for some time. Once it is cooled, keep the jar on a shelf inside the cupboard and leave it for about a month. After a month, it will be ready for consumption, and once it's opened, store it in the fridge. This is how you make sweet pickled onions, and if you want to make them tangy, don't add the sugar or add very little amounts just as preservative. Recipe with Pickled Onion
You can use these pickled onions in any other recipes like, chicken gravy, sandwiches, salads and many other foods. Like white onions, you can have pickled green onions as well as red onions. Once you've made them in the method mentioned above, you can add them in any recipe you'd want to have their taste in. Ingredients
- 2 pickled onions
- 3 fresh tomatoes
- Carrots
- 4 chopped garlic cloves
- 3 tablespoons white wine
- 2 rosemary leaves
- Salt and ground pepper
- 500 grams boiled or roasted chicken pieces
- 3 teaspoons lemon juice
- 3 teaspoon roasted sesame seeds, black and white
Take a large salad bowl and add the chopped pickled onions and tomatoes. Add salt and pepper to make the onions and tomatoes lose water. Then add the fresh stalks of rosemary by breaking them with your hand, the chopped carrots and the chopped garlic cloves. Sprinkle some pepper and the roasted sesame seeds to make it look colorful and attractive. Pour the white wine and the lemon juice and toss the salad well.
