Peyronies disease is not god’s wrath

Mostly occurring in men over 50 years of age, Peyronies disease is a typical condition that results in a bend in the penis. Its occurrence is limited to one to three men in hundred.

Despite extensive research its exact cause is unknown. As a result its exact treatment is also not available. Most doctors are of the opinion that Peyronies disease is caused by a injury to the penis leading to internal bleeding. The resulting lump is non cancerous and causes the penis to bend one way. Some researchers believe that this is caused due to an auto immune disorder.

The lump or plaque in the penis can effect erection or cause girth and length reduction but it rarely leads to erectile dysfunction or inhibits sexual intercourse.

Peyronies disease is named after the French surgeon Francois de la Peyronies, who first described its treatment in 1743.

In most cases men suffering from Peyronies seek treatment for pain and bending of penis during erection. Detailed physical examination can be used for diagnosis. The initial diagnosis can be further confirmed by examination during erection which can be induced by injecting chemical into the penis or by self stimulation. The plaque is generally visible and can be felt even of the penis is flaccid. A detailed examination usually requires an ultrasound.

Whatever the severity of the disease, its psychological impact is many times more severe than the physical pain. The patient may need to undergo numerous counseling sessions to cope with the stress.

Those suffering from Peyronies disease must not hurry to get surgery as in most cases the disease has reduced in severity over a year. If the ability perform sexually reduces considerably, then surgery may be the last option using Nesbit procedure, tissue grafting or implant surgery.

Oral medication and injecting chemicals into plaque have been used for treatment but have none of these have had a success rate that is worth mentioning. If there is pain due to the disease, radiation therapy does bring relief. Doctors and researchers are still looking for an effective treatment.

Peyronies disease is a mystery for medical science. Its causes and cure are still not fully understood. It seems that time is by far the best cure. But if things do get out of hand surgery is usually performed.

This disease has been found to run in families but most cases are not hereditary. The mystery continues.

Onset of Peyronies is accompanied with extreme panic and psychological stress. It is easier said than done but if the patient copes up in the initial stages; the chances of overcoming the disease are considerably increased.

Seek professional help to combat the disease.

It is a medical condition and not gods wrath.
