Pet Store Problems With Shar Peis

Training is the only way that the most common Shar Pei problems with strangers and other dogs can be partially mitigated. Grooming a Shar Pei may be problematic. The Shar Pei is very easily aggravated when its ears are touched and its paws touched. Ear cleaning and nail trimming can be an adventure.
Regardless of your age of your dog many Shar Pei problems can be solved with training. However, as with most unique breeds such as the Shar Pei there are a large number of medical problems that the dog may be subject to as well. It is these Shar Pei problems that are the hardest for the owner to deal with. Special veterinary care is usually required and some of the skin conditions will require constant management by the pet owner.

The Shar Pei is not a low maintenance pet, nor is it an inexpensive pet to own. Ownership of a Shar Pei, as with all dogs, should be carefully considered and the commitment made only with the full buy-in of all the family members who will be involved. This is especially true if it an older dog and has many problems or illnesses already. This is true of all pure dog breeds.
Purebred dogs are typically more susceptible to behavioral problems than the common garden variety of mutts. After hundreds of years of breeding for a particular trait or look many of the other more standard temperament issues were overlooked. On the other hand frequent weekly bathing and the use of good grooming habits can simply manage a health issue or other Shar Pei problem that is associated with their skin. Unfortunately even good grooming can become a problem for Shar Pei owners. They do not like their ears being touched or their nails being trimmed. Of course this is true of any dog, however because of the fighting nature of a Shar Pei this can lead to some real problems. Early training is really the only way that you can get your Shar Pei to understand that this is not a threat and you can thus de-sensitize them to such normal activities.
The Shar Pei is now one of the most common pets in the world. Despite their aggressive behaviors they are very lovable and friendly to those that they trust. There are indeed many pet owners who would only own this particular type of dog. There are also many who would regard that as strange behavior given the obvious behavioral problem with this pet. Indeed, Shar Pei problems are many and include routine medical care, grooming issues and aggressive tendencies. It would appear that this is all compensated for in the rather mysterious origins of the breed and the obvious attraction of their very unusual look. However, it is true that most happy pet owners obtained their animal as a puppy and maintain an effective dominance over their pet. They train them continuously and exercise them appropriately to keep them out of harms way. This is one pet that needs a truly committed dog owner and not a part-time pet lover.

Melissa Coleman often holds informational lectures about the proper techniques for Shar Pei training. Shar Pei training is necessary for a well balanced psyche. A dog training book on Shar Peis should include content providing a consideration of the impact of the animal on the owners family and time.
