Pet Food Choices in the Marketplace

A number of individuals create their own pet food. As with food meant for humans, the key is proper ingredients to make nutritious meal times. An alternate option is one of the available brands of dog food. Speak with a professional, and listen to all of the different meal suggestions.
Pet food meant for dogs are prepared by several people consisting of ingredients bought from the health food or grocery store. However, others depend on dog food, which is available in the market. Best diet suitable for dogs is based on several recommendations.

Some people argue that dogs have thrived off of leftovers and scraps from their human owners for thousands of years and that commercial dog foods which have only been available for the past century contain poor-quality meats, additives, and other ingredients dogs should not ingest, or that commercial dog food is not nutritionally sufficient for their dogs.

The average dry pet food is the least expensive, per pound, when compared to its canned or semi-moist counterparts. It is usually 6-10% moisture by volume, as compared to up to 78% in canned food. It can be beneficial in the prevention of tartar buildup, as well as being less likely to spoil quickly than an open can. However, if cans are opened only at the time of feeding, they will tend to keep longer than dry food, as dry food cannot be opened on an as-needed basis unless stored in an airtight.

The little pieces of dry pet food are what's known as kibble. Kibble can be produced through extrusion or baking. Kibble made by extrusion starts with a dough or raw mixture of materials being fed into a machine called an expander. In the expander, pressurized steam or hot water is added causing high pressure. This high pressures puffs up those little pellets like popcorn. After the kibble has dried, it's given a spray that contains ingredients that wouldn't stand the heating process, such as vitamins, fats, and oils.

If not properly sealed, it is possible for dry food to lose its quality. Oxygen is known to react with components added after initial preparation, altering the taste. Further, the heat involved in shipping the wellness dog food can also have negative effects before it even hits store shelves. Another alternative comes from the Burns company.

Pet owners desire food for their pets that is closest to its natural state. This may make it easier to digest for their pet. Baked kibble is the choice for most pet owners because the heating process occurs over a longer period of time at a lower pressure. This slower process seals the fat content in rather than applying it after the baking process. In addition to increasing the quality of the product, the baked kibble stays fresher longer, even after the package has been opened and resealed.
