Requirements for Perming Curly Hair

Firstly, you are required to buy a mild perm which has less amount of alkaline. A majority of perm sets would have the type printed on its label. Choose one that mentions that it is gentle.

You also need to get the largest perm rods since you have tight and tiny curls which you want to make smooth and manageable. As perm rods are colored and coordinate with the curls' size, the most recommended ones are brown and orange. These colors would be placed alternatively in your hair.

One of the significant things that you need to buy is end-papers. Ensure that you do not start perming curly hair without their use. They play a crucial role in protecting the ends of the hair from over-processing. You would even require a rat tail comb and some clips for holding certain sections of the hair.

Tips on Perming Curly Hair
  1. The first step in perming curly hair is washing and lightly towel-drying them. However, the hair should be substantially wet when rolled, for which you can keep a water spray bottle handy throughout the perming procedure.
  2. Make neat and equal sections of the hair by a comb. Start off by making a section of hair right below the center of the head, similar to a Mohawk hairstyle. Position it in two clips, dividing the two parts at the crown. Then divide the rest of the hair into four segments; one on any direction of the head before the ears, and the other two sections on the opposite sides of the head, behind the ears. Now you have six divisions of hair; three behind and three in the front. Keep in mind that all the divisions need to be no broader than the rods themselves.
  3. Take out the clip from the center-back section of the head. Let the hair loose and fall down naturally and then comb through any knots. Utilizing the rat tail comb, section the first portion, beginning at its top. During this procedure, simply ensure that the section is separated properly, and is really thin but no thicker that 1/8th of an inch.
  4. Hold the division in one hand and position the end-paper beneath the ends of the part. Then, position one end of the rectangular end-paper in a horizontal manner under the segmented portion of hair, and fold the other half over the top part of the segmented portion. By doing so, the top and the bottom of the hair ends get entirely overlaid. Spray the end-paper which now overlays the hair, generously with the water spray.
  5. The next step you need to take is to wrap the hair around a brown rod and cautiously roll the hair, including the wrap, and secure with the rubber holder which is attached to the rod. Continue with this procedure, switching between the orange and brown rods, until the entire portion is complete. Do the same for the next two behind portions and then the front portions till the complete head is rolled.
  6. Put cotton around the margin of the face, just at the hairline in order to preclude the perm solution from falling on the face and skin. Use the perm liquid according to the instructions and rinse. Also use the neutralizer and rinse once more at the instructed time. Take out the rods lightly, along with the end wraps and let the smooth new curls to dry naturally.
When it comes to perming curly hair, just ensure that your hair does not undergo the process too often as it will be harmful and permanently ruin and damage the hair.
