People Building Newsletter No. 3
An insight into the motivational and informative newsletter published by People Building.
Hello People!
People Building is an NLP and Hypnotherapy Training company. You have been sent this newsletter because the contents may be of amazing interest to you.
We hope you will find something that gets you thinking in our December issue. This month we include some tips for goal setting, which may come in handy when making those new years resolutions!
NLP TIPS Goal Setting
What are goals? A goal is simply an outcome or end result that you want to achieve. Some people distinguish between primary goals (what you want) and secondary goals (the stepping stones of activities that you must complete in order to achieve the primary goal).
The NLP method for setting goals utilises the SMART Criteria for goal setting used in business and also adds further refinement based on NLP principles. If you follow the process below your goals will be well-formed and it is much more likely that you will achieve them. (S-specific, simple; M-measurable, meaningful; A-achievable, act as if; R- realistic, responsible; T-timed, toward.)
What do you want?
State goals in the positive: what you do want, not what you don't. The unconscious mind does not recognise negatives as such, and will first seek out what you dont want in order to reject it. For example, if your goal was "I dont want to keep eating chocolate" your unconscious mind will be focused on chocolate. Its better to say "Id like to eat 5 portions of fruit/Veg a day".
Be specific. The better you understand how your goal will look, sound, and feel the more probable the outcome will be as you intended. Also this will support your unconscious mind in finding resources to help you achieve your goal. Also think about Where, when, and with whom do you want your goal?
How motivated are you to achieve your goal? What larger outcome is this part of? How does it fit in with your beliefs and values? Aligning your goals, actions, and values is a powerful way of ensuring that you achieve your desired outcome.
Be specific in setting a date by when you want to achieve your goal. Make sure you give an actual date as opposed to by "one months time". One months time can easily keep rolling into the next month!
If you achieve your goal, what will that do for you? And what will having that do for you? Ask these questions several times to uncover what you really value.
How will you know when you achieve it?
Be specific -- what will you see, hear, and feel? What will you be doing, and what will others notice about you? Imagine stepping a year or two into the future and having your reached your goal. Look back and determine what steps were required to achieve the goal.
How will you know you're moving toward your goal? What signs will show you that you are making progress. If what you do doesn't work, do something else. The law of requisite variety states that the "person with the most flexible behaviour with have the most influence over outcomes".
Is your goal achievable?
If someone else has done it, then in theory you can do it too. Find out what resources they needed.
If the goal seems overwhelming, break it into smaller steps.
What stops you from having what you want now?
Is achieving your goal within your control and do you have the required resources?
Make sure your goal reflects things you can directly affect.
If your goal involves other people, make sure it's about what you can do. Its not possible to change someone else, only how you feel or what you do about it! What resources do you already have to help you reach your goal? For example, skills and training, motivation, information, emotional state, financial resources, time and support.
What resources do you need, and how can you acquire them?
Check the ecology of your goal it is acceptable in terms of consequences
How will achieving your goal affect other areas of your life, other people, and the environment?
What might be the benefits of not achieving your goal?
Make sure you set the first piece of action you will take toward achieving your goal! Good Luck!

Ha Ha Ha!!!!
A psychiatrist was conducting a group therapy session with four young mothers and their small children. "You all have obsessions," he observed.
To the first mother he said, "You are obsessed with eating. You even named your daughter Candy."
He turned to the second mum. "Your obsession is money. Again, it manifests itself in your child's name, Penny."
He turned to the third mum. "Your obsession is alcohol and your child's name is Brandy."
At this point, the fourth mother got up, took her little boy by the hand and whispered, "Come on, Dick, let's go home."
Motivation
"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee."
