Parents' Group Protesting New Britney Spears Song

Britney's new release, If You Seek Amy, is being protested by The Parents Television Council, citing the title of the song and how it sounds when spoken quickly.
Oh, Britney. The marketing machine that drives your career is certainly sharp. The title to Britney's latest release, If You Seek Amy, is a not-so-cleverly veiled play on words to suggest the sound of "F-word me". Obviously, that is enough to get at least one parents' group up in arms and calling for the song to be removed from the airwaves between 6AM and 10PM daily. So far, it seems that the song is getting its due airplay without restriction, already rising to number 92 on Billboard's Pop 100 chart.

But you have to wonder how far the Britney machine needs to go to keep this poor girl in the spotlight for dubious reasons. If You Seek Amy? Is that really what it's come to?

From at least one perspective, you can understand it. Britney is still young enough to generate the kind of bad-girl buzz that has driven her career. What better way to stoke that fire than with over-the-top lyrics and song titles that will keep the kids talking about her and the old people leering at her. There have been many artists that have played the sexual innuendo card effectively and helped their careers along. Madonna comes immediately to mind.

But it seems like the "entire" Britney image is now revolving around her sexuality. As we approach a full decade of this approach, it may be time to consider shifting gears at least a little bit. Or just walking away from the whole thing. Britney certainly has enough on her plate outside of her music to occupy her for years to come.
