How to Make Paper Flowers

Enough of the usual rose and lily bouquets. It's time to try something new. Presented here is a step by step guide on how to make paper sunflowers, and further arrange them into a bouquet. To be able to make paper flowers, it is ideal to have a sample of the real flower, to get an idea about the exact shape of its petals, and achieve a look with the paper flower, that is as close to the real flower as possible.

Materials Required
  • Sunflower, 1
  • Tissue paper - yellow, gold, dark green, dark brown
  • Sharp scissors
  • Fast dry glue
  • Hard paper plate - 3" diameter
  • Paper wire stems
  • Floral tape
  • Sunflower seeds
Method
  1. Place each tissue paper (yellow, gold, dark green) over the other in the above mentioned order. Fold the entire pile into halves, four times, till you achieve a square that measures about 6 inches on every side.
  2. With reference to the original flower petal, cut out the shape of two to three sunflower petals from this pile, using sharp scissors. To create a realistic effect, cut out different sizes of the petals. You should be able to attain about 48 petals in the yellow and gold colors, with 24 leaves from the dark green colored paper.
  3. Design the sunflower around the paper plate. Using glue, start sticking the green leaves around this plate, close to the center. Apply the glue only to the lower edge of the leaf and stick it to the center of the plate, with the rest of the leaf extending outside, so that the plate is completely covered.
  4. Flip the plate over, and start gluing the yellow and gold leaves, while alternating the colors, around the edges of the plate, leaving 2 inches empty in the center.
  5. Take a 10 inch by 10 inch piece of brown tissue paper, and scrunch it up to wrinkle it. Flatten this wrinkled ball of paper with your hands, and stick it to the empty central patch of the sunflower.
  6. Leave the sunflower to dry for at least one hour.
  7. Get some sunflower seeds, and stick them at the center of the sunflower, for a realistic effect.
  8. Take a paper wire stem, and wrap it up with green floral tape. Punch a hole just enough to accommodate the stem, through the center of the sunflower. Apply some glue around the area of the stem that is to be inserted into the flower. Push the stem through and stop at the edge. Use a sunflower seed to cover up the visible portion of the stem in the center.
  9. To make the entire flower stronger and hold it together, pierce a scrunched up piece of tissue paper below the sunflower, through the stem, and use the floral tape to cover it up.
How to Make a Paper Flower Bouquet

Once your paper flowers are ready, making a bouquet is a simple task. You can combine the flowers in various arrangements, to make interesting patterns. Take a 4 inch plastic pot, and put a piece of foam in it. Start placing the flowers in the desired arrangement. This arrangement may be one-sided, with all the flowers facing the front, or circular, where the flowers encircle the entire pot. Use some dried foliage for a realistic effect and a fuller bouquet. For fragrances, add in some potpourri at the base of the pot, or just spray the fragrance of the flowers you have made. For a handheld bouquet, first arrange the flowers in the desired pattern along with the foliage, and tape the stems together with floral tape. Now use a fancy wrapping paper and wrap up the base using tape to stick it together. Make an interesting ribbon pattern and stick it at the center, to complete the beautiful bouquet.
