Panic, Stress, Anxiety - Relief Ideas - That Could Change Your Life
Cut yourself some slack, monitor your negative tendencies and keep chipping away at them. Celebrate your progress as you go.
Take it easy on yourself. Be compassionate and extra kind to yourself. You need it and deserve it. In all likelihood you've been worrying for a long time, and it is your brain's learned response. In fact, your years of practice have made you pretty darn good at it. Your not going to change old habits in an instant. But you can retrain your mind to think neutrally, with "neutral self-talk", also by choosing what you observe, and also how you respond. Neutral thinking is about replacing negative thoughts with neutral thoughts. See my article: "End Anxiety and Panic Attack Once & For All", for more on neutral thinking. What you choose to observe can help you to avoid negative influences; the news, for example is often very negative. It may pay you to be very selective about what you choose to watch on the news.
You also want to monitor your own responses, and route out negative responses, replacing them with neutral ones. As time goes by, you will notice improvements, however small. Sometimes they may be breakthroughs. Celebrate these moments, remember to lighten up, and enjoy yourself, have some fun; it will do you good! It may also assist you to keep a journal of how you are feeling, any insights you gain along the way, what works and doesn't work, and any progress or breakthroughs you make. As you start to think more neutrally, you will realise that some of your tendencies are more pervasive than others. You can chip away at the negative tendencies, as I say always noting and celebrating your progress as you go. Never berate yourself for slow progress, nor should you ever make the common mistake of comparing yourself to other people who may seem to progress faster than you.
Each persons life is far too unique to be able to validly compare it to any other persons life. This is because there are far too many independent variables unique to each, no valid comparison can consequently be made. At the end of the day this is your life it is for know one else but you. There will be those people who want to help you, but, the only one who can really help you is yourself. Integrate positive changes into your life in whatever way and at whatever pace works best for you. Go at your own pace and stick with it, its just a matter of time.
Learn to appreciate when you need to stop and take a rest. Become keenly aware of what your own acceptable stress level is, and don't go over it. Remember, you don't have to do everything at once, so don't try to, take your time. Work at a comfortable pace without overdoing things. If you don't get everything done then there's always tommorrow. Tackle one thing at a time, take one day at a time. Even superman can't do it all! And we aren't superman. So you can't do it all neither! You weren't created or designed to do everything.
Doing everything isn't up to you. Help yourself, take a breather and relax while you can, when you can, make the time, the world will go on without you. Chances are if you're are reading this that you're not doing this as often as you should be. The other thing, don't fall into the trap of trying to run your life to perfection, like you are in some way responsible for every bad thing that happens to you or your family; you can't dictate everything that happens in life. If there is something you can be certain of it's that life is full of surprises. Life will be forever changing in a way that is out of your hands. Don't fear problems, or what might happen.
Do your best in the given circumstances. I think there is a misconception these days that a winner, as distinct from a loser, is someone whose life "appears" to run with seamless perfection. However, because life is inherently unpredictable such a belief is obviously not an accurate measure of a man or women. What makes a man or women a winner should not be a seamlessly perfect life, running to perfection, rather what should matter is the way he or she handles what life throws at him/her. Legend is full of stories of great men and women, not because these people never made a mistake, or never had a major problem in their life, or because they had seamlessly "perfect lives"; their stories have become legend because of the way they handled the circumstances they found themselves in.
Because they overcame their self in the process. This idea is refered to as "triumph of human spirit", and is an expression of what many historians believe to be the highest human quality, the ability to overcome "oneself". A war hero, for example, who puts aside his own fear of death and jumps onto a grenade to save his comrades, knows he will die and is afraid of death but jumps onto the grenade. This quality distinguishes man from an animal. You can relate it to everyday situations. For example, maybe you are afraid to go into public because you fear that you will have a panic attack and this will make you look foolish. Start by recognizing your own needs, fears, insecurities, and desires. Develop your self awareness.
The next step is to develop detachment from this self. Try to see your needs, fears, insecurities, and desires from the perspective of a third person. Then, start developing your ability to step into your higher self, I'll call this your "higher hero self" for now, think of the example of the war hero who jumps onto a grenade. The key point is how the hero successfully overcame himself, his biological self, his needs, fears, and desire to live. This biological self is represented by these needs, fears, insecurities, and desires. The higher hero self is above this biological self.
The higher hero self is over the needs, fears, insecurities, and desires of the biological self. Begin to develop your ability to step into your higher hero self. To go back to the panic attack example again, if, in that example, you successfully managed to transcend your biological self and successfully stepped into your higher hero self you might have decided to go to a busy shopping mall despite being afraid that you would suffer a panic attack.
Final note, it has been theorized that anxiety is your body communicating with you. After years of ignoring feelings, and bottling up emotions your body has had to up the ante to get your attention. Pay attention, put in place these ideas and ideas from my other articles and your body will tone down the message.
