Ozone Air Purifiers
Ozone air purifier not only freshens the air but also purifies it, by removing air pollutants like bacteria, molds and fungus.
The activated oxygen produced by these ozone air purifiers breaks down and oxidizes indoor bacteria, fungus, germs, molds, pathogens, viruses and other air pollutants.
How does Ozone Air Purifier Work?
Ozone is a natural component of the air that we breathe everyday. The basic oxygen molecule in the air is composed of 2 oxygen atoms whereas ozone is composed of 3 oxygen atoms. Ozone is produced when oxygen molecules are split into 2 separate atoms either by lightning, high-voltage electrical charge or by ultraviolet radiation.
The extra oxygen molecule present in ozone separates from the ozone molecule and attaches to other molecules coming in its way. It oxidizes the particles by changing their chemical composition. Thus the separated oxygen molecule oxidizing the particle too is destroyed leaving behind pure and clean oxygen.
Thus ozone oxidizes the pollutants and reverts back to oxygen, converting the polluted air to pure and clean air. This is how the ozone air purifier works.
What are the Benefits of Ozone Air Purifiers?
Ozone air purifiers are useful in removing the microorganisms and viruses causing allergic reactions, diseases and unpleasant odors like bacteria, fungi and molds. Thus these air purifiers can reduce the risk of allergies, bacterial or viral infections, hay fever and respiratory problems to some extent.
Ozone air purifiers are also helpful in removing the harmful effects of particulates in the air. Use of ozone air purifiers improves sleep and reduces headaches and depression. These air purifiers not only clean the air but also make it smell fresh and pure.
Ozone air purifiers are best for areas with bad odors and high pollution like bars, salons and factories.
What are the Disadvantages of Ozone Air Purifiers?
Breathing ozone, even in small amounts is not at all good for health. Inhaled ozone can react with the compounds in the body and can damage lung tissue. It may also cause asthma symptoms and worsen sinus problems. Ozone air purifiers are not able to remove the particles that trigger asthma attacks and therefore can make asthma worse.
Ozone air purifiers may also cause side effects like throat irritation, chest pains, coughing and shortness of breath. It may even increase the risk of developing respiratory infections. For a person already suffering from respiratory problem, the ozone inhalation can worsen the condition.
The problems caused when ozone is inhaled in small amounts can be recovered but the problems caused by longer and stronger inhalation can’t be recovered. Because of these disadvantages associated with the use of ozone air purifiers, you should be very careful while buying these purifiers.
