Overcoming Golf Swing Inertia

The basic key to increase extra yards during golf swing is to reduce the moment of inertia. Here is some information about overcoming inertia in the golf swing.
Overcoming Golf Swing Inertia
For improving golf swing, a player needs to follow a correct training regime as well as understand the basics of the moment of inertia. As per the definition in Physics, the moment of inertia (MOI) is the tendency of an object to remain in its original state (either at rest or in motion), until and unless an external force applies on the object. The principle of MOI is related to the golf swing; during the backswing the speed is zero (at rest), and in the downswing a force implies on the ball to set it in motion. Reducing the MOI during downswing is a key to achieve faster acceleration and/or a greater swing speed. Let's take a look at the tips on how to overcome golf swing inertia.

Overcoming Golf Swing Inertia

In the beginning, as the golfer takes the position for swinging, the golf-club is at rest. Eventually, the golfer uses some force to his swing (backswing), which sets the club into motion. The club will continue to be in swinging motion, unless another force is applied to stop it. This can be achieved if a force is imparted in the other direction (downswing). The faster the swing speed, the longer is the distance traveled by the ball. In simpler terms, the quicker a player can accelerate from the backswing to the downswing, the more will be the swing speed.

In the backswing and downswing, both the inertia and force are responsible for regulating the direction and speed of the club. To be precise, in the golf swing, the body tries to maintain balance, which in turn, is the key to overcome the golf swing inertia. While retaining balance, the body uses the natural tendency and distributes the weight to overcome the MOI. Thus, in the downswing the exerted force stops the club, which is in motion and redirects it in the opposite direction.

If a player understands the natural tendency of the body and uses it effectively, then he/she will find it very easy to maintain a proper golf swing, and achieve a powerful swing consistently. An effective practice to overcome golf swing inertia is regular step training, which is performed by swinging the club to the top and at the same time, stepping the first foot in the direction of the target. This way, the force exerted on the club can be balanced between the backswing and the downswing, which in turn, will help to accelerate faster.

Another tip to increase the swing speed and/or distance is to maintain the downswing radius as small as possible along with the correct gripping position of the hands (fully cocked position), before striking the ball. Other basic tips for lowering golf swing inertia includes, a balanced start up, proper gripping of the club, balanced distribution of weight from backswing to downswing and a proper release of the club. These are some easy-to-follow golf tips for overcoming inertia in the golf swing. With regular practice and correct training, a person can become a successful golf player.
