Orthoclase Uses

Orthoclase is one of the hard crystalline minerals and is rich in potassium. Let us find out more about this mineral and its uses.
Orthoclase is an important silicate mineral (rock-forming mineral) that forms the igneous rock. Its two cleavage planes are perpendicular to each other which gives it the look of a 'straight fracture', which is known as Orthoclase in Greek. Hence, the name Orthoclase. It belongs to the mineral group of Feldspar. The other names for this mineral are alkali feldspar and potassium feldspar. Some other uses and details are given in the below paragraphs.

Orthoclase is a rock-forming mineral and hence is abundantly found in granites, pegmatite and similar igneous rocks. It is the most common type of k-spars or the potassium feldspar. It is also the most common alkali and is white or pink in color. The pink color is due to a healthy amount of potassium constituent of orthoclase. It is found as grains and crystals. Orthoclase means a white feldspar. The following paragraphs will provide more details on its uses.

Orthoclase Feldspar Mineral

The chemical formula for orthoclase is KalSi3O8 and the composition of this mineral is - potassium (K) 14.05%, aluminum(Al) 9.69%, silicon(Si) 30.27% and oxygen(O) 45.99%. This mineral has the density about 2.56 and the hardness of this mineral is 6. Another property is that it is brittle and hence easily breakable. Orthoclase is one of the essential constituents of igneous rocks like granite, phonolite and gneisses, to name a few. When analyzed, soda and lime are also found along with potassium. It is transparent to translucent and is also available in green, yellow and red colors along with white and pink. It is found all over the world and in the US, it is found in Pennsylvania, San Diego, Nevada etc. It is found in basalt cavities and in metamorphic rocks with high temperatures.

Uses of Orthoclase :
  • Orthoclase is mainly used as gemstones because it is transparent and translucent.
  • As orthoclase is clear and pale yellow in color, it is a collector's item.
  • Orthoclase is used in various proportions while making porcelain and earthenware.
  • It is also used in wall tiles and ceramic floor tiles because it improves the strength and durability of the tiles.
  • Orthoclase is known for its aluminum content.
  • Glass making is also one of the uses.
  • Orthoclase is also famous in the industries as it acts as flux.
  • Used as a bonding agent with magnesium chloride and other synthetic glue to manufacture wheels and discs is another use.
  • Another use is that it is used to make a thin slurry and mixed with silica powder for adding glaze.
Apart from the above, other uses for orthoclase feldspar include -
  • Common raw material in the manufacture of geopolymers.
  • Used for optical dating in archeology.
  • Used in several housecleaning products.
  • Moonstones are made from the orthoclase mineral.
  • It is the birthstone for the people who are born in June.
  • Due to its growing popularity, fashion jewelry is made because of the beautiful colors of orthoclase.
  • Orthoclase is used for crystal healing purposes.
  • This wonderful mineral is also used to strengthen bones.
  • It is believed that keeping it close to us also helps to boost our energy levels.
  • Another use is during meditation due to its calming and soothing properties.
As you can see, its uses are many. It has gained immense popularity due to its beautiful hues and the crystalline appearance. People have realized the properties of orthoclase and have come up with plenty of uses.
