These vows symbolize the love and commitment of the bride and groom, towards each other and the promises that they make to live a happy and fulfilling life together. A wedding is a symbol of the love and the commitment that two people share with each other. It binds the two people together in a relationship, that calls for acceptance, understanding, faith and an undying love for each other. The tradition of wedding vows dates back to the times when marriage was not only a commitment between two people but a commitment between a village and a person. Original wedding vows is a great way of putting forward your sentiments and feelings towards your beloved, in words that have been penned down by you.

How to Write Original Wedding Vows

Writing original wedding vows should be considered as an essential part of the wedding preparations. If you are not the creative kinds, you may not be able to fancily pen down the exact sentiments, that you want to convey and it might get quite confusing. But remember, it is what you convey and not how you convey, that matters. Your wedding vow need not be a poem or have a rhyme scheme, it can be simple and yet touching. It should be able to reflect how you feel about your to-be-spouse and everything that you would do to keep him/her happy. Here are a few points that will help you pen down original wedding vows.
  • Start writing the wedding vows individually and then you can also work with your to-be-spouse to write some of the vows.
  • The first step in writing an original wedding vow is, to give your relationship with your to-be-spouse a good thought. Jot down all the special things that you would have done together, the moments and gestures that made you both feel special.
  • Jot down everything that you love about your to-be-spouse or his/her qualities that you like.
  • Make a list of adjectives that describes your relationship with him/her.
    Using these adjectives, pen down around five points that elaborate your sentiments towards your to-be-spouse and your relationship.
  • Add a few lines about the kind of future you see with him/her and everything that you would like to do for him/her.
  • You can also elaborate on the significance of your to-be-spouse in your life and why you chose him/her to spend your entire life with.
  • Once you are done with the above points, make a list of the promises that you want to make. For this purpose you can either modify or personalize some of the traditional wedding vows.
  • The next step would be to read out the original wedding vows that you have penned down to your to-be-spouse. Discuss what you liked about each others original wedding vows and if you would like to add or edit certain things.
    Also decide whether you would like to read out the original wedding vows yourselves or would like the wedding officiant to read them out.
  • You can also discuss the marriage vows with a family member or trusted friend and make use of their suggestions for some improvement in the wedding vows. You can also do this if you would like to surprise your to-be-spouse with your original wedding vows on the wedding day.
  • The most important step would be to practice the delivering of the original wedding vows so that you are confident about conveying them, on the big day!
