Origami for Kids

Origami is a traditional Japanese art. This art involves folding of papers and making different shapes out of it. Origami comes from two different word, ori that means folding and kami that means paper. So, we get the art of paper folding. Earlier the different sculptures made from this art like butterflies were used for decorating bottles during the Japanese weddings.

Origami is one of the unique paper crafts that gives ample of opportunity to the kids to learn origami and enjoy as well. This art is not only liked by kids, but admired by the adults as well. Origami for kids is a great way to engage them and make them learn a famous traditional art. Now let us start by learning some with simple origami instructions for kids.

Easy Origami for Children

Different objects can be made if kids learn the art of origami. Here are some ideas for beginners to learn and enjoy.

Origami Flowers
To make an origami flower, horizontally, fold the paper into half and cut the paper into two. Repeat the same steps to get four rectangles. Now cut the paper from two sides, one from the short end and another from the long end. Repeat the steps to get four small rectangles. Now you have eight rectangles. Keep the rectangles on the table facing up. Fold the top flap out and up and flip over the sheet. Now fold inward the two outside edges and fold top points as well. To hold the paper model from the center, make a crease and flip it over. Repeat the same steps with the other seven rectangles. Once all these petals are ready, start sticking them together with larger petal first and then the four smaller petals. Stick a pom pom at the center and make a stem of the flower out of a discarded paper with small leaves.

Origami Hat
To make an origami hat, take a rectangular origami paper. You can also cut out a rectangular sheet out of a square origami sheet by cutting out nearly one inch of paper from a side. Horizontally, fold the rectangular sheet into a half. Bring the top two corners toward the center to give it a look of a triangle. Make sure that you crease all the folds properly. Now hold the edge at the bottom and fold its top side upwards. Repeat the same step for the bottom edges after turning over the paper. From the bottom opening, slowly open the hat. Now it is ready for you to wear.

Origami Boat
Take a square origami paper. Now make a half out of it from both the sides towards the center and crease all the folds properly. Now, unfold the folds and join the parallel sides of the paper towards the reference line or the center line of the paper that was made by pressing the crease tightly. Now bring all four edges of the paper towards the center and make them look like triangles. Now again you are left with four corners. Repeat the previous step of bringing all the corners to the center. Only two corners are left along the reference line. Finally, flip the paper outward to get the boat.
